Crisp, Brown Win USATF Junior Titles, Qualify For Worlds

Vincent Crisp & Charles Brown punched their tickets to the IAAF World U20 Championships in July
CLOVIS, Ca. – Texas Tech track & field racked up two USATF Junior Championships, putting two Red Raiders into the IAAF World U20 Championships, while also holding a second-place spot in the heptathlon on Saturday, June 25, at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
Vincent Crisp, who qualified with the fifth-fastest time in the prelims on Friday, put together a fantastic race in the final of the 800 meters on Saturday night. Sitting in fourth after the first lap, Crisp kicked hard on the final 200 meters of the race and passed the leaders, crossing the finish line with a new personal-best and the USA junior championship at 1:46.97.With the win, Crisp punched his ticket to the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on July 19-24. The time not only broke the stadium record, but also the meet record. It is also the fastest 800-meter race run by a Red Raider in 2016.
Crisp won't be alone in Poland, as he'll be joined by Charles Brown after posting a lifetime best in the triple jump mere minutes after Crisp crossed the finish line. Brown jumped out to an early lead by putting down a mark of 15.62m/51-3. A second attempt a mark of 15.90m/52-2 reinforced his lead until being passed in the third round.
He would only trail briefly, as Brown unleashed a monster jump of 16.35m/53-7.75 on his fifth attempt to blow past the leader and earn him the title. Donning a Texas Tech uniform on Saturday in California, Brown's mark moved him up to No. 4 all-time at Texas Tech and earned him a trip to the World meet.
Future Red Raider Justin Hall placed eighth in the event with a mark of 14.98m/48-10.25.
Kaylee Hinton got off to a strong start in the heptathlon on Saturday afternoon. She opened the competition with a time of 13.94 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, earning her 987 points. The time won her heat two and was the top overall mark in the field, giving her an early first round lead.
She would be one of seven to clear 1.67m/5-5.75 in the high jump, doing so on her first attempt, to add another 818 points. The mark was just two centimeters shy of her personal-best and gave her 1,805 points at the midway point of day one.
In the shot put, she tossed it to a mark of 9.48m/31-1.25 to earn 495 points, then rounded out her night with the second-fastest 200-meter dash time at 24.78 for 907 points. Her 200m time was a personal-best and helped her secure 3,207 points on day one, sitting only 24 points behind the leader in second.
Incoming freshmen Ardran Carr and Norman Grimes competed in the 400-meter hurdle prelims, but were unable to qualify for the final. Carr just missed the cut with the ninth-best time in the field at 53.38, while Grimes crossed the finish line with a time of 54.99. Hinton will wrap up the USATF Junior Championships on Sunday, June 26, as she looks to punch her ticket to the IAAF U20 World Championships with a strong finish in the heptathlon.
