LUBBOCK, Texas – Fresh off a top eight finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials, sophomore Trey Culver will compete for Team USA at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics (NACAC) U23 Championships on Sunday, July 17, in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Culver will be one of two from the United States in the high jump field of nine. Joining him in red, white and blue is Avion Jones, who competes for East Carolina. Others in the field include: Christoff Bryan (Jamaica), Sean Cate (Canada), Alhaji Mansaray (Canada), Kareem Roberts (Trinidad & Tobago), Matthew Campbell (Jamaica), Ken Franzua (Guatemala) and Aaron Gumbs (Anguilla).
The high jump competition will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 17.
Culver put together a fantastic sophomore season donning the scarlet & black. At the NCAA Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, Culver claimed the national title after being the only competitor to clear 2.23m/7-3.75, an indoor personal-best. His win made Texas Tech the only school in history to win back-to-back men's NCAA indoor high jump titles with different athletes. He also earned silver at the indoor conference championships.
At the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, he notched Tech's fourth overall high jump crown and third-straight at the outdoor meet. He qualified for his second consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning first team All-America honors behind a fifth-place finish (2.19m/7-2.25) in Eugene. Last weekend, he posted an eighth-place mark at the U.S. Olympic Trials after clearing 2.16m/7-1. The mark that put him in the event came at the Texas Relays, where he hit a lifetime best 2.26m/7-5.
