Red Raider Trio Ready For IAAF World U20 Championships
July 19, 2016 | Track and Field
Texas Tech track & field will have three representatives on Team USA at the championships this week.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track & field will be represented by three individuals, who will be donning red, white & blue apparel, at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships on Wednesday, July 20-Sunday, July 24, in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Â
Charles Brown (triple jump), Kaylee Hinton (heptathlon) and Vincent Crisp (800 meters) will compete for Team USA at the championships. To qualify, the trio had to already hold the meet standard and finish top three at the U.S. Junior Championships, or be one of the only three in the final standings to have achieved the standard over the past year.
Â
Brown and Crisp won titles in their respective events at the U.S. Junior Championships on June 25, in Clovis, California. Both chased down personal-bests to take home gold at the meet. Brown unleashed a monster jump of 16.35m/53-7.75 on his fifth attempt to blow past the leader and earn the victory. Minutes earlier, Crisp came out of nowhere on the final 200 meters of the 800-meter final, threw down a strong kick to cross the finish line with a winning time of 1:46.97.
Â
Hinton got off to a strong start in the heptathlon at the championships, sitting only 24 points behind the leader in second with 3,207 points. Her hopes of a top three finish were derailed after three-fouling in the javelin; however, since there was not a third member of the field that already had the standard, Hinton earned the bid to the World Championships. That standard was hit on April 21 at the Kansas Relays, when she put together a score of 5,348 points.
