Brown Advances To Triple Jump Final In Poland
July 20, 2016 | Track and Field
Charles Brown posts the seventh-best mark in the qualifying round on Wednesday morning.
BYDGOSZCZ, Poland – Texas Tech track & field's Charles Brown kicked off the Red Raiders' week at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships on Wednesday morning, July 20, in the qualifying round of the triple jump at Zawisza Stadium.
Brown got the ball rolling early, as he hit a mark of 15.71m/51'-6.5" on his first attempt in the competition, which shot him up to sixth in the standings. The field started to heat up in round two, as Brown dropped to 13th after his second attempt went for 15.55m/51'-0.25."
With the top 12 advancing, Brown needed a big jump to stay alive and advance to Thursday's final, and that's exactly what he got. Brown charged down the lane and hit the sand at a distance of 15.97m/52'-4.75", moving back into seventh and guaranteeing him a spot in the final round.
The finals will be contested under a new format this year. Each of the 12 competitors will get three preliminary jumps, then the field will be dwindled down to six. The final six athletes will then get only one jump to end the competition.
It is the third time in 2016 Brown has jumped 52' or better in a competition. At the NCAA West Prelims, he launched himself 52'-8" (16.05m), which was also the then ninth-best mark in school history, to send him to the NCAA Championships. The second time did it earned him the U.S. Juniors title, traveling to a distance of 53'-7.75" (16.35m), which is the No. 4 jump in Texas Tech history.
With a U.S. title under his belt, the next trophy to add to Brown's bag can come on Thursday, July 21, at 1:10 p.m. in the triple jump final.
