Lady Raiders Set For Foreign Tour Of Spain, Portugal In August
July 22, 2016 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders will head across the Atlantic Ocean for a foreign tour of Spain and Portugal, Aug. 15-25, which will include games against three select/all-star teams.
Â
Tech will begin the tour in Lisbon, Portugal, by taking on CRC Quinta Dos Lombos at the Pavilhao Desportivo Dos Lombos on Aug. 18th at 8 p.m. From there, the Lady Raiders play Madrid Select at the Palacio de Los Deports in Madrid on Aug. 20th at 7:30 p.m. The final game of the tour will be in Barcelona, where Tech will face Barcelona Select on August 23rd at 8 p.m.
Â
Before the Lady Raiders depart Lubbock, they will be able to hold practices at United Supermarkets Arena beginning Aug. 3. The practice on Saturday, August 6, will be open to the public and will take place from 2:30-4:30, and a meet and greet with the team will follow the practice. The NCAA allots teams to have 10 practices before leaving on a foreign tour.
Â
"The time together and the 10 days of practice that comes with a foreign tour gives you so much that really shows up in November, December and January," Texas Tech head coach Candi Whitaker said. "I had this opportunity a couple times as an athlete and I would have never been able to do something like this without basketball, so to give this opportunity to our young women is huge. We're extremely thankful to Kirby Hocutt and our administration for supporting this."
Â
In between the games, the Lady Raiders will visit various Spanish and Portugese landmarks in Lisbon, Cabo da Roca, Cascais, Portugal, Toledo, Spain, Madrid and Barcelona.
Â
"I think this is very cool and I know we're excited," Sophomore guard Japreece Dean said. "Not a lot of us have had the opportunity to be out of the country, and this also gives us the chance to play together earlier than most teams get to, so we're very excited."
Â
The NCAA allows teams to participate in foreign tours once every four years. This will be the Lady Raiders fourth such tour, having traveled to Canada (British Columbia, Vancouver, Whistler & Victoria) in 2010, Australia (Sydney, Brisbane & Cairns) in 2005 and France (Paris & Nice) along with Switzerland in 2001.
Fans will be able to follow the Lady Raiders with a live blog on texastech.com, which will begin with Tech's practices in early August.
