Carson Secures Silver In Javelin At Olympic Trials

Hannah Carson finishes runner-up in javelin on Saturday in Eugene.
EUGENE, Ore. – Texas Tech track & field's Hannah Carson put on the scarlet & black uniform for the final time on Saturday, July 9, at the U.S. Olympic Trials and earned silver in the women's javelin.
Â
"I am so amazed with how I finished today, whether I got to go to Rio or not," Carson said. "I went out there and gave it my best, and that's all you can ask for, to do what you came here to do."
Â
Unfortunately, she did not already hold the Olympic standard, nor did she achieve it during the competition and will not represent Team USA in Rio.
Â
After fouling her first attempt, Carson jumped into second in the standings and would hold onto that position after tossing it a distance of 58.19m/190-11. She put all her efforts into her final four throws, but would not improve to finish second in the event.
Â
"I was definitely trying to overdo it," Carson said. "I had that 62 (meter) barrier in my head; I was definitely trying to go for it.
Â
"It's kind of disappointing in a way, but there's nothing I can do about it. I might as well have a smile on my face and keep pushing until next year."
Â
Consistent with countless meets before, Carson added another mark to the school's top 10 list with her toss at the Trials, this time at No. 4. It was the eighth time in 2016 she's added a new mark to the top 10 list. She leaves Texas Tech with all 10 of Tech's top 10 marks in the javelin, as well as the discus school record. This season, she became the first woman to ever throw the javelin and the discus 200' in the same NCAA career, let alone the same season, and only the second ever to accomplish it. Carson also secured two NCAA runner-up finishes in the javelin and two Big 12 titles while donning the scarlet & black.
Â
Omo Osaghae, who grabbed the final qualifying spot in the 110-meter hurdles on Friday, posted a 16th-place finish on Saturday in the semifinal round. Running in lane seven in the second heat, Osaghae crossed the finish line in fifth at 13.91 seconds to cap off his time at the meet.
Â
The Red Raiders will wrap up the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials on Sunday, July 10, as Bradley Adkins & Trey Culver look to punch their ticket to Rio in the men's high jump.
