August 19, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
The Red Raiders will square off against each other in one final tune up before the 2016 season.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team hosts the 2016 Red & Black Scrimmage at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the United Supermarkets Arena Practice Gym, which will serve as the final preparation before the new season begins the following week.
Â
All fans will receive complimentary admission to the scrimmage, and will be asked to use the west ground-level doors by the ticket office to enter the arena as they have in the past.
Â
"I'd like to see us play well in pressure moments and be able to execute when we really need those points," head coach Tony Graystone said on what he's looking for from the team on Saturday. "We have a lot of competition going on and I'd like to see that separate itself a little bit. We're just trying to generate these game-environment moments the best we can so that when we get it all together and do it for real we can be ready."
Â
Texas Tech returns 10 student-athletes from last year's squad, including seniors Lauren Douglass and Marguerite Grubb. Douglass is coming off a spectacular season in 2015, when she led the team in kills (280), kills per set (2.95), hitting percentage (.377), solo blocks (19), assisted blocks (70) and total blocks (89). Her totals earned her All-Big 12 honors for the second-straight year, as well as All-Southwest Region accolades by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Grubb also put together a strong junior season, tallying 1,007 assists to become the first Red Raider since 2013 to record 1,000 assists in a single season. She comes into 2016 needing only 21 assists to crack the school's all-time top 10 list in the category.Â
Â
The Red Raiders will start the 2016 season on the road for the first two weekends of non-conference action. Opening weekend will take Tech to Portland, Oregon, for the Portland State Tournament on Aug. 26-27, where they'll take on Colorado at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by Long Beach State (1:30 p.m.) and Portland State (9:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
