LUBBOCK, Texas – Five former Texas Tech women's golfers began play Thursday in the first of four rounds of LPGA qualifying school held at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.
Â
Hannah Arnold, Elin Arvidsson, Stephanie Bertelsen, Sarah Brown and Kimmy Hill are among the 347 players vying to advance to the second stage of qualifying school. The LPGA will take the top 90 players (and ties) from this weekend's tournament.
Â
The four-round tournament began Thursday with Arvidsson leading the way, shooting a 2-under 70 to sit in a tie for 20th overall. Arnold and Brown are also well below the cut line through 18 holes after Arnold fired a 1-under 71 (tied for 36th) while Brown was 1-over (tied for 88th).
Â
Bertelsen and Hill will look to jump up the leaderboard over the next two rounds after recording 3-over and 5-over cards. Bertelsen is currently tied for 161st while Hill is tied for 227th overall.
Â
The field will be cut to the top 130 players for Sunday's fourth and final round. All players who complete 54 holes will receive Symetra Tour status in 2017.
Â
The second stage of LPGA qualifying school will take place Oct. 27-23 at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida.
Â
The group is looking to join another former Lady Raider on the LPGA Tour in Kim Kaufman, who has already played in the U.S. Women's Open and RICOH Women's British Open this year. Kaufman is in action again this weekend, playing in the Canadian Pacific Women's Open. Â
