August 05, 2016 | Women's Tennis
The Lady Raiders have earned five straight NCAA Tournament bids under head coach Todd Petty.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis program had five of its players put together successful summer campaigns.
Felicity Maltby won singles titles at the ITA Summer Circuit events in Arlington and College Station whereas incoming freshman Alba Cortina Pou captured the singles championship in the ITA Summer Circuit event held in Lubbock. Maltby also secured the doubles crown with Alex Valenstein in Arlington, while Cortina Pou teamed with incoming freshman Reagan Collins to claim the doubles title in Lubbock.
Valenstein came away with a runner-up singles finishes at the ITA Summer Circuit event in Arlington and at the Fort Worth 25K wild card which enabled her to earn a qualifying spot of the Fort Worth 25K event.
Gabriela Talaba defeated several Top 500 players en route to her second professional final in addition to a quarterfinal and semifinal run at 10K events throughout the summer. Maltby also made her first pro quarterfinal appearance at the Austin 10K event where she also defeated a Top 500 player.
"Above anything else, I can't be more pleased of the hard work and the sacrifice these players have put in during the summer," Texas Tech head coach Todd Petty said. "This is the most important time when it comes to getting better, and these young ladies are putting it on themselves to raise the bar for next season. To have this many playing at this time of year is an absolute credit to their dedication to their teammates and next year's success."
Texas Tech has coming off consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history fueled by a program-record 25 victories during the 2016 season. The Lady Raiders have picked up back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.
Texas Tech is slated to return its top seven players which recorded every dual match victory last season. Sarah Dvorak along with Maltby, Talaba and Valenstein picked up All-Big 12 Second-Team honors in 2016.
