Texas Tech Set To Tee Off 2016-17 Campaign
September 01, 2016 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas --Â The Texas Tech men's golf team is set to tee off the 2016-17 season this weekend at the Carmel Cup, which will be held at Pebble Beach, in Monterey, Calif, Sept. 2-4.
Â
The Red Raiders feature five returners coming off a 15th-straight NCAA postseason appearance and the 17th team tournament win under head coach Greg Sands in 2015. Tech took fifth as a team at this event a year ago, navigating the 6828-yard, par-72 course to the tune of 19-over as a team.
Â
"It does not take much to get excited to play at a course as prestigious and popular as Pebble Beach," Sands said. "It is hard to prepare for this tournament because school started on Monday, but I know all of the guys have been playing well over the summer."
Â
Unlike most collegiate tournaments, where five members of the team compete, The Carmel Cup allows six athletes to represent their schools. The six Red Raiders in Pebble Beach are Hannes Ronneblad, Sandy Scott, Federik Nilehn, Federico Zucchetti, Hurly Long, and Ivan Ramirez.
Â
Returning for his senior year, Ronneblad is looking forward to opening the season at the iconic location, where he finished third individually as a sophomore before tying for first a year ago, before ultimately falling in a playoff.
Â
"I have always felt relaxed when I play there," Ronneblad said. There is something about the atmosphere that is so beautiful that you just walk around feeling good all of the time."
Â
Paired with one of the nation's best courses will be some of the nation's best competition.
Â
Joining Texas Tech this weekend will be, Ohio State, TCU, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Georgia and Vanderbilt, five of which are ranked in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. Though Tech is not ranked, the Red Raiders did receive votes.
Â
Tech will begin the three-day tournament at 10 a.m. on Friday, led by Long. Zucchetti, Scott, Nilehn, Ramirez, and Ronneblad will follow off the first tee. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
