The Red Raiders move to No. 25 in this week’s NSCAA coaches poll.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team stayed in the top 25 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings this week, checking in at No. 25, it was announced today.
It continues their streak of 20-straight weeks with an appearance in the top 25 of the poll. The Red Raiders opened the season at No. 19 in the preseason rankings, then moved up each of the next two rankings to 16th & 15, respectively. In each of the last two weeks, Tech has dropped one spot, despite going 3-0-1 during that four-match stretch.
The Red Raiders (7-1-2) wrapped the non-conference portion of the season with a pair of road contests last weekend. Tech battled Loyola Marymount to a 1-1 draw in Los Angeles on Friday, Sept. 16, before picking up a 1-0 victory over San Diego State two days later.
Tech's lone goal was tallied by Rebekah O'Brien against the Lions on Friday night. O'Brien racked up six shots at LMU, four on goal, on her way to her second goal of the year and Tech's 11th in second half action in 2016. The other score for the Red Raiders during the weekend came on an own goal by the Aztecs, making it the second time Tech has benefited from an opposing team's misfire.
The non-conference slate featured three teams who have been either ranked or receiving votes in the poll, while four Big 12 teams also fit the bill coming into conference play. On Friday, Sept. 23, Tech will travel to Lawrence, Kansas, to face the Jayhawks (5-3-2) at 7 p.m. at Rock Chalk Park. The Red Raiders will then open the home conference schedule against Iowa State (6-2-0) on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
