Culver Receives Bowerman Preseason Watch List Votes
January 05, 2017 | Track and Field
This marks the fourth time a Texas Tech student athlete has been on the watch list.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track & field's Trey Culver is receiving votes on the Preseason Bowerman Award Watch List, as announced by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this afternoon.
The junior high jumper has racked up numerous accolades during his first two seasons as a Red Raider. The Lubbock native has placed in the top-10 in all of his regular season appearances throughout his collegiate career as well as qualifying for Nationals in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
"If anyone deserves this preseason honor it is Trey," Head Coach Wes Kittley said. "He is the epitome of what our program is all about and we are very proud of him!"
Culver acquired the NCAA Indoor high jump title, secured a first place finish in the Big 12 Outdoor Championship and snagged a second place finish in the Big 12 Indoor Championship all in his 2016 season.
The three-time All-American also made it to the final round of the Olympic Trials with a personal-best qualifying jump of 2.26m/7-5 and received a silver medal at the North American, Central American, & Caribbean U23 Championships.
"Anytime you have an athlete's name even mentioned among the absolute best it's definitely an honor," Associate Head Men's Coach James Thomas stated. "Preseason recognition, predictions, or assumptions can either create added pressures or motivation. Hopefully Trey continues to thrive off of both this season."
Culver is the fourth Texas Tech student athlete to be placed on the Bowerman Award watch list following Jacorian Duffield, Kennedy Kithuka and Cierra White.
Culver will compete in the Commodore Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee for Texas Tech track & field's first meet of the season beginning Friday, January 13th at 4 p.m. CST.
