No. 5 Tech Sits In Fourth Through One Round Out West
February 17, 2017 | Men's Golf
Zucchetti (-1) is in eighth place individually
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 5 Texas Tech men's golf team occupies fourth place after one round at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, on Friday.
The Red Raiders (+4), despite missing Carmel Cup and Amer Ari Invitational champion Fredrik Nilehn, came out of the gates hot with four birdies in the first five holes, but scuffled on holes 6-12 before rebounding with some birdies late.
Tech is just three shots out of second place, but everyone is chasing No. 10 Oregon, who went six-under on the 18th hole, which turned out to be the Ducks' score to end the day.
"We didn't execute the way we wanted to today, and obviously it hurts missing Fredrik [Nilehn] but I like where we are on the leaderboard, all things considered," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "The course played tough today, but I'm confident we can adjust and keep ourselves in contention going into Sunday. We definitely had some bright spots, specifically Federico Zucchetti getting four birdies on the back nine to close it out."
Zucchetti's aforementioned late flurry of birdies landed him at one-under on the day, in eighth place individually. Ivan Ramirez birdied 18 to finish with a one-over 73, good enough to tie for 15th overall. Sandy Scott (+2), Hannes Ronneblad (+2) and Hurly Long (+3) rounded out the scoring for the Red Raiders. Hayden Springer, playing as an individual, shot a 75 and is tied for 41st place.
Action at The Classic Club will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m., central time, and live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
