Texas Tech has a pair of Red Raiders in the individual top 10
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 5 Texas Tech men's golf team went 10-under in the second round at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday to remain in fourth place.
Sandy Scott set the tone early on with three birdies in the first four holes on his way to a five-under 67, which helped Tech cut No. 10 Oregon's lead to five shots early in the day. However, Tech went four-over par on holes 5-7 and dropped back into fourth place.
From there, the Red Raiders fired 22 birdies on holes 8-18. Hannes Ronneblad, Hurly Long and Scott all had stretches of three consecutive birdies on the back nine. Tech carded plenty of birdies late, but bogeys sprinkled here and there prevented the Red Raiders from recording an even lower score.
Tech went 10-under par on the day, but was not able to move up the leaderboard as Kansas (-7) went 12-under, Colorado (-19) went 22-under and Oregon (-23) carded a round of 17-under par to keep the Red Raiders in fourth.
"I thought we did a better job of taking what the course gave us today," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "We had some inconsistency that prevented us from having a truly special day, but we did a lot of things right. I thought Sandy bookending his round with birdies was awesome and a sign of things to come. We're going to go out there tomorrow and take care of what we can control, and see what happens from there."
Scott's round moved him into a tie for eighth individually at -3 with Federico Zucchetti, who fired a two-under 70. Long shot an impressive four-under 68, which included birdies on 13, 14, 15 and 18, to move to -1 for the weekend, tied for 14th.
The final round at The Classic Club will begin at 9 a.m., central time, and live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
