Texas Tech will face No. 13 Purdue in 18 holes of stroke play Sunday in Naples, Florida
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team will open their spring slate Sunday morning when the Lady Raiders travel to Naples, Florida to battle No. 13 Purdue in 18 holes of stroke play at the Forest Glen Golf and Country Club.
Â
The Lady Raiders, who are ranked 41st nationally by Golfweek entering the spring season, will tee off the event at 7 a.m. CT Sunday morning with a lineup consisting of juniors Gaby Barker and Lauren Mason as well as sophomores Caralyn Barker and Mami Yamamoto and freshman Sofia Garcia.
Â
Barker heads into the spring as Tech's highest-ranked player according to Golfweek as she is No. 80 nationally after posting a team-best 72.6 scoring average this fall. Barker finished in the top 25 during all five fall tournaments, which included her third career medalist honor in the season-opening Red Raider Invitational.
Â
Garcia, meanwhile, boasted Tech's second-lowest strokes average during the fall as she narrowly trailed Barker with a 73.8 clip per round. Her fall was boosted by a fifth-place performance in the Betsy Rawls Invitational as well as a 23rd place showing a week prior in the Jim West Challenge.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be looking to build off two top-five finishes already this season as Tech opened the year in second place at the Red Raider Invitational held at The Rawls Course. Tech also put together a fifth-place showing at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in mid-October.
Â
The 18-hole event against Purdue came together after the Lady Raiders had the final two rounds of the Trinity Forest Invitational canceled in early November due to rainy conditions. Tech has also scheduled another head-to-head competition on March 5 as the Lady Raiders will host Texas at The Rawls Course.
Â
Tech head coach JoJo Robertson was previously an assistant on the Purdue staff from 2005-09 before taking over the Lady Raiders for the 2009-10 campaign. Since then, she has led Tech to the NCAA Regional round six times in her seven seasons.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be looking to continue that trend this spring as an NCAA Regional berth would land Tech back on its home facility at The Rawls Course. Tech is one of four NCAA Regional hosts as the three-day tournament will run May 8-10 with the top six teams advancing to the NCAA Championships.
