Preview: T&F Hits Three Meets

The track & field team will split this weekend to compete at three meets in three states.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track and field begins their split meet weekend this afternoon in Dallas, Texas at the Dunamis Sports Group College Classic. Tomorrow the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas at 1 p.m.

JUMPMAN
Leading the jumps for Texas Tech with the highest global (No. 23) and indoor qualifying (No. 2) mark is Trey Culver in the men's high jump. Culver matched his personal-best bar of 2.23m/7-3.75 in Albuquerque last weekend, the first time he has hit this bar in this year's indoor season. Last year this clearance won Culver the NCAA Indoor Championship crown. Dominating both vertical and horizontal jumps this season is sophomore Charles Brown. Brown is currently ranked No. 9 in the NCAA in the men's high jump(2.20/7-2.50), No. 5 in the long jump (7.81m/25-7.50) and No. 15Â in the triple jump (15.80m/51-10). His long jump mark also sits him in the first-place seat in conference rankings. Zarriea Willis is No. 2 in the conference with her high jump bar of 1.80m/5-10.75. Willis has proven her consistency clearing this mark three weekends in a row.

TOPPING THE RANKS
According to Track & Field News, both the Texas Tech men and women's teams were ranked in the top-10 in dual meet competition. The men's team came on top at No. 5 while the women were not far behind sitting at No. 10. The men were bumped back up to No. 12 this week in the USTFCCCA computer rankings. Charles Brown's high jump mark of 2.20m/7-2.50 put him on the indoor qualifying board in the No. 9 spot. This is the fourth-consecutive week that the men have been placed in the top-15 by USTFCCCA.

THAT'S A WRAP, NEW MEXICO CLASSIC
Ardran Carr shaved off some time in the men's 400m race running a 49.17 personal-best race. Taylor Rockwell and Jadsia Warden also notched new personal-best times in the women's 400m in 55.29 and 56.36 respectively. I'Shunique Hamilton and Tiffani Johnson both had impressive weekends earning PRs in both their 200m and 60m races. Andrew Hudson matched his No. 12 in the world 200-meter mark of 20.80 finishing second at the meet. Zarriea Willis met her personal-best bar of 1.80m/5-10.75 for the third meet in a row keeping her No. 2 spot in the Big 12. Darien Tennon placed second overall in the men's 60H yet first amongst collegiate entries, matching his personal best of 7.94. Trey Culver, Charles Brown and Justin Hall all pushed for PRs in the men's high jump with Brown also earning a PR in the triple jump.

Next weekend the Red Raiders will stay in Lubbock to prepare for the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa on February 24th and 25th.
