February 27, 2017 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders took down Abilene Christian, 3-1, and West Texas A&M, 4-0.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team kicked off its spring season with a pair of wins over Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M on Saturday and Sunday at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
The Red Raiders (2-0) took down the Wildcats, 3-1, before handing the Lady Buffs a 4-0 loss.
ACU got on the board first in game one, but Tech responded with three unanswered goals, as sophomore Tatum Barton knotted up the contest with a strike in the first half. After the break, the Red Raiders added two more tallies thanks to juniors Carly Wickenheiser and Gwennie Puente for the 3-1 score.
Junior goalkeeper Carissa Christensen made her debut in goal, replacing one of the four seniors from the 2016 squad, facing only five shots in the match. The Red Raiders pounded the Wildcat goal with 17 shots.
Less than 24 hours later, Tech was at it again with the offensive outpouring, posting three goals in the first 45 minutes of action. Senior Natalie Schmutz picked up the opening marker for Tech early in the frame for the quick 1-0 lead. Enter Barton, who notched the other two of the three first half goals for the Red Raiders, bringing her spring total to three.
Junior Jordan Duke polished off the 4-0 victory with a second-half score to send the Red Raiders to a 2-0 start to their five-match spring season.
It's a great start to 2017 for Barton, a Lakewood, Colorado, native, who racked up 20 shots, seven on goal, in her debut fall season at Texas Tech, but was unable to find the back of the net. Duke, Puente and Schmutz all posted goals during the 2016 season, as Puente led the spring scorers with two during the fall campaign.
Up next for the Red Raiders is a pair of road trips to Bossier City, Louisiana, to take on Northwestern State on March 4 at 3 p.m. The second will take place on April 15, when Tech travels to Albuquerque to face New Mexico at 2 p.m. The Red Raiders will wrap up their spring slate at home against Air Force the following weekend at 10 a.m.
