March 31, 2017 | Softball
Texas Tech looks to rebound in the series finale Saturday at 1:05 p.m. on FOX College Sports.
WACO, Texas – After earning a sweep to start Big 12 play, Texas Tech softball suffered its first losses in conference Friday at No. 14 Baylor, falling 5-1 and 6-3 in a doubleheader at Getterman Stadium.
Â
Texas Tech (16-16, 3-2) and Baylor (31-6, 4-1) aim to close the series Saturday with first pitch currently slated for 1:05 p.m. on FOX College Sports.
Â
"I believe we played the game the right way today," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "Our kids battled and competed every single inning. (Kelsee) Selman threw an incredible game one and their hitters created havoc on the base paths as we anticipated. Kassidy Scott threw her heart out today and gave us a chance to win. We had a few opportunities not go our way late, but our kids played so hard and I'm very proud of the way we represented."
Â
Red Raider freshman Kassidy Scott went toe-to-toe with the Big 12's ERA leader Kelsee Selman in game one, as Tech trailed just 2-0 through four innings before a three-run shot by Bear Shelby McGlaun off senior Mattison Maisel in the fifth made it 5-0.
Â
Tech hung tough with six hits in the game to Baylor's eight. Sophomore Jessica Hartwell made her impact felt in the top of the seventh, blasting a no-doubter off the top of the scoreboard in centerfield for Tech's only run of the game.
Â
Game two was even tighter as Tech pushed across a pair of runs in the fourth inning to make it 2-2. Scott pinch hit with the bases loaded and brought home a run with a sac fly to center. Freshman Raina O'Neal then scored thanks to a wild pitch.
Â
Baylor regained a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame, before senior Susan Welborn connected on her sixth home run of the year to even the contest at 3-3 in the next half inning.
Â
The game remained tied heading into the bottom of the sixth when Baylor was able to pull ahead and close out a 6-3 win.
Â
Scott pitched a combined 9.1 innings between the two games, bringing her season total to 105.2, which is third in the Big 12. She gave up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks in game one and six runs on 11 hits with two walks in game two.
Â
Senior Kierra Miles reached base three times on the day, going 2-6 with a walk and three stolen bases. Welborn tallied hits in both games as well, finishing the day 2-5 with a home run and a hit by pitch.
