The Red Raiders had five different goal scorers on Saturday afternoon in Bossier City.
Bossier City, La. – The Texas Tech soccer team improved to 3-0 over the 2017 spring slate after rolling over Northwestern State, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at the 2017 Spring Classic on Freedom Fields, hosted by First Baptist Church Bossier City.
Â
"It was a really tight match for our staff," head coach Tom Stone said. "Give [head coach] George Van Linder credit, they had their team tight, made the field crowded and difficult for us to break them down."
Â
Saturday's contest was scoreless after the first 45 minutes of action. To open the second half of play, Stone and his staff moved senior defender Rebekah O'Brien up from defense to the midfield, looking to create a spark in the offensive output.
Â
"In the second half, our possession opened them up for a bit and we got a fantastic first goal from Cassie Conarty, which kind of opened things up and gave us a little more room to play," Stone said. "The rest of the goals came as a result of being patient getting forward and being assertive in the final third."
Â
Conarty struck first after a feed from sophomore Tatum Barton, who had racked up three goals over the first two matches this spring. O'Brien added another, unassisted, giving the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead after 60 minutes of action.
Â
From there, the Red Raiders threw down four more tallies over the final 30 minutes, with back-to-back goals from sophomore Demi Koulizakis. Sophomore Jade King assisted on Koulizakis' first score, while junior Lauren Dabner helped create the first of many New Zealand-Australia connections for Tech, assisting on Koulizakis' second marker to put the Red Raiders up, 4-0.
Â
Senior Natalie Schmutz posted her second goal of the spring season after a feed from O'Brien, while sophomore Savannah Jones picked up her first score in a Tech uniform with three seconds remaining in the match thanks to another assist from Dabner.
Â
"We can't thank Pastor Brad and First Baptist Church Bossier City church enough for hosting this event," Stone remarked. "It's our second year in-a-row and they do an absolutely fantastic job. It was a great crowd, tremendous facility and an awesome environment for a spring game and this is an event we look forward to every year."
Â
The Red Raiders return to action on April 15, when Tech travels to Albuquerque to face New Mexico at 2 p.m.
