Garcia Garners Big 12 Player Of The Week Honor
April 10, 2017 | Baseball
The junior infielder hit four home runs in three games over the weekend against Baylor
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball junior infielder Orlando Garcia picked up his second award of the day after being honored as Big 12 Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Â
Garica was also named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday, the first honor for a Red Raider this season and first since Bobby Doran in 2010.
Â
His accolade marks the sixth weekly conference award for a Red Raider in 2017, as Tanner Gardner (March 13), Steven Gingery (Feb. 27), Hunter Hargrove (Feb. 21), Josh Jung (Feb. 21) and Grant Little (March 27) have all received recognition by the Big 12 this year.
Â
Garcia racked up a .471 average over 17 at-bats last week, helping the Red Raiders to a 3-1 record against New Mexico State and then-No. 29 Baylor. He tallied eight hits, including four home runs, along with 11 RBI, six runs scored and three walks.
Â
All four of his dingers came against the Bears over the weekend, including two on Sunday. His homers in the series finale came in consecutive at-bats in the third & fifth innings, making him the first Red Raider to do so since Eric Gutierrez against Oklahoma on April 27, 2014. Garcia also became the first to home in three-straight games since Gutierrez did it against Baylor on May 16-18, 2013.
Â
It was the second time this season Garcia has hit two homers in a single game, the first coming against New Mexico State on Feb. 21. He now has a team-high eight home runs and 37 RBI this year.
Â
The No. 6 Red Raiders complete their four-game home stand on Tuesday, April 11, against New Mexico at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
