The sophomore lefty is one of 40 to be named to the midseason watch list
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball's Steven Gingery has been named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, it was announced today.
Â
The midseason watch list features 40 of the nation's top amateur players from the college ranks. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will continue to maintain a rolling list of athletes, allowing players to play themselves into consideration for the award before announcing the semifinalists on May 31.
Â
Gingery, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, California, is off to a 6-0 start to the 2017 season over eight appearances on the mound. The left-hander has put together a 1.00 ERA over 54.0 innings pitched, allowing just eight runs in eight starts, six earned, while striking out 57 and walking only 14. Opponents have been held to a measly .157 when they step to the plate against Gingery.
Â
In conference play, Gingery has given up only one earned run in three starts, picking up a 2-0 record as Tech has won all three games he's started. He has 18 strikeouts against Big 12 opponents and has only given up nine hits.
Â
In each of his first seven starts, Gingery tallied at least five strikeouts, including four different outings with eight punch outs along with a season-high 10 at Oklahoma on April 1. He's thrown a quality start in all eight appearances and has not allowed an extra-base hit in each of his last five outings.
Â
Earlier this season, Gingery was honored by the Big 12 Conference as its Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 27 after a 7.0 inning performance against California that weekend. In the win over the Golden Bears, he racked up seven strikeouts, while giving up just one run on two hits that included six-straight scoreless frames and two separate streaks of eight-straight batters retired.
Â
The list of semifinalists will be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that follow amateur baseball closely, select professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball staff and the 39 previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 200 voters.
Â
The 2017 Golden Spikes Award winner will be named on Thursday, June 29, at a presentation in Los Angeles. The finalists and their families will be honored at the Rod Dedeaux Foundation Award Dinner that evening at Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles.
Â
Gingery and the Red Raiders return to action on Thursday, April 13, as they travel to Manhattan to take on Kansas State at Tointon Family Stadium.
