Warnecke Homers as Tech Drops Game Two to Texas
April 14, 2017 | Softball
Red Raiders close seven game home stand Saturday at noon with game three of the series.
Â
Warnecke finished 1-4 with a home run and two RBI and nearly hit her second home run of the game in the seventh. Sophomore Kiani ramsey went 2-4 with two runs scored while senior Susan Welborn recorded a double and a run for the Red Raiders.
Â
"I thought we battled way better yesterday," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "I thought today we were questioning a lot of things, not really trusting our ability and not being gritty. I thought we played a little scared, and it showed in some errors we had and in some bases we didn't take. If you're going to win at this level, you have to be going on all cylinders every day, all day long, every opportunity you get and we didn't do that today."
Â
After Texas plated a run in the top of the first and second, Warnecke evened the score at two with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, her fourth home run of the year and Tech's Big 12-leading 38th of the season.
Â
"I thought [Warnecke] played really, really great." Gregory said. "I think that she was very competitive at the plate and got some great hits, a long ball that gets us in and ties it back up. She gets another one that's right at the wall, which on a non-windy day flies out. I thought she made incredible plays. I also thought Susan Welborn played phenomenal. That kid is pouring her heart out into the game and representing us great in every single way. Those are great seniors that our kids have to understand that this is how you play the game, this is how you play it right. Those kids are how we want all of our kids to play every day."
Â
Texas, however, responded with four runs in the top of the third, chasing starter Mattison Maisel, on their way to a 6-2 lead. Texas had the bases loaded with two outs and got a single from first baseman Kelli Hanzel that ended up clearing the bases due to a Red Raider error. Hanzel then scored one batter later off a double to center field.
Â
The Red Raider defense aided the Longhorn offense, committing three errors for the first time in a Big 12 game this season.
Â
Junior Cheyene Powell came on for her second appearance in Big 12 play, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks. A day after throwing 174 pitches on 13.1 innings, freshman Kassidy Scott tossed two more Friday, scattering four hits and giving up a run.
Â
Texas held an 8-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, but the Red Raiders continued to battle at the plate through the latter stages, scoring a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and finishing with nine hits in the contest.
Â
In the fourth, sophomore Kiana Workman hit an RBI single in the fourth to score Ramsey. The next inning, freshman Raina O'Neal followed a double by Welborn with a double of her own to bring in a run and make it 8-4. Then, in the sixth, Senior Devon Thomey recorded an infield single, scoring Strickland from third. Â
Â
The loss moves Tech to 17-22 on the season, 4-7 in Big 12 play while Texas improves to 22-18 and 2-6 in league play. The two teams close the series Saturday at noon.
