Red Raiders In The Pros - Week 3

Twenty-two former Texas Tech standouts have started their 2017 professional seasons.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball has six former standouts on major league squads in the early parts of the 2017 season, with 16 in different levels of the minor league system.

The six Red Raiders in MLB include: Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies), Daniel Coulombe (Oakland Athletics), Nathan Karns (Kansas City Royals), A.J. Ramos (Miami Marlins), Josh Tomlin (Cleveland Indians) and Kelby Tomlinson (San Francisco Giants).

Sixteen additional Red Raider standouts have started the year in the minor leagues, sprinkled throughout the ranks from Class A to AAA.

CHAD BETTIS – Colorado Rockies - RHP
Bettis began the season on the 60-day disabled list after needing chemotherapy to treat cancer. On Nov. 29, Bettis underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells and was deemed to be a success on Dec. 22, but in March it was determined he would need the chemotherapy to continue treatment. Last season, Bettis led the Rockies in innings pitched with 186.0, putting together a 14-8 record.

DANIEL COULOMBE – Oakland Athletics - LHP
Coulombe has made eight appearances this season for the A's over the first three weeks of the year. He's tossed 7.1 innings, allowing just three runs on eight hits, while striking out three. Last week, he had three outings out of the bullpen, throwing a combined 2.1 IP, giving up just one run on one hit against Seattle on April 22. The A's are 10-11 this season and are third in the A.L. West for the third-straight week.

NATHAN KARNS – Kansas City Royals - RHP
Karns has made five appearances this for the Royals, the first in relief and the last four starts. His last two outings have been a little rough, earning back-to-back losses against the Rangers & the White Sox. In both contests, he rung up at least five batters, punching out six without issuing a walk on April 26 against Chicago. The Royals are 7-14 this year and are fifth in the A.L. Central.

A.J. RAMOS – Miami Marlins - RHP
Ramos has made nine appearances out of the bullpen for the Marlins this year. Last week, Ramos rebounded from a tough outing in Seattle to post back-to-back shutout innings against San Diego on April 22-23. The first came in a save situation, where he struck out two & gave up one hit en route to shutting the door on the Padres, making him 3-for-3 in save opportunities this year. He also tallied a perfect inning the following day to close out the 7-3 win. This season, the Marlins are 10-9 and are second in the N.L. East.

JOSH TOMLIN – Cleveland Indians - RHP
Tomlin has made four starts this season for the Indians, posting a 1-3 record. Against the Astros, Tomlin tossed 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out six without issuing a walk. It was the second-straight outing Tomlin has gone 6.0 full frames. This season, the Indians are 11-9 and are tied for first in the A.L. Central.

KELBY TOMLINSON – San Francisco Giants - INF
Tomlinson was recalled to the active roster on Wednesday after the Giants placed SS Brandon Crawford on the bereavement list. It is his third stint with the club in as many years. Before getting the call up, Tomlinson had played in 14 games this season for the Sacramento River Cats, racking up 13 hits along with four RBI and 11 runs scored. This season, the Giants are 8-14 and are fifth in the N.L. West.

BLAKE BASS (RHP) – Down East Wood Ducks – Carolina League - Class A Advanced – Texas Rangers
Bass has pitched in six games in 2017, picking up a win and a save for the Down East Wood Ducks. Over 11.0 innings, Bass has given up 15 hits and 10 runs, six earned, while striking out five. Last season, Bass was 6-3 with two saves in 36 appearances in Class A ball for the Hickory Crawdads.

DALTON BROWN (RHP) – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – Midwest League – Class A – Milwaukee Brewers
Brown has made two appearances this season for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Over 3.2 innings, he's struck out two, while giving up six earned runs. Last season, Brown finished 1-1 with one save in 12 outings in Rookie League play with the Helena Brewers and the Arizona League Brewers.

SHANE BROYLES (RHP) – Hartford Yard Goats – Eastern League – Class AA – Colorado Rockies
Broyles has pitched in six games this year for the Hartford Yard Goats. He's finished two games, earning one save, racking up seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings. He's allowed only three runs on three hits in his second year with the club. Last season, he appeared in 36 games, picking up one save and 69 strikeouts in Class AA play.

MATT CUSTRED (RHP) – Rome Braves – South Atlantic League – Class A – Atlanta Braves
Custred has made five appearances in 2017 for the Rome Braves. In 10.2 innings, he's allowed only one earned run and six hits, while ringing up 14 opposing hitters. He sits with a 0.84 ERA early into his second season in Rome at Class A ball. Last season, Custred made 40 appearances, posting a 5-3 record with two saves, striking out 64 over 56.2 innings pitched.

TY DAMRON (LHP) – Beloit Snappers – Midwest League – Class A – Oakland Athletics
Damron has made three starts and five total appearances for the Beloit Snappers this season. He picked up a save in his first non-start of the year, totaling 19.2 innings, giving up only four earned runs. Damron has already struck out 23 hitters, while walking only four, well past his 2016 total of 15 strikeouts in Short A ball last year.

JONNY DROZD (LHP) – Fort Myers Miracle – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Minnesota Twins
Drozd has pitched in six games for the Fort Myers Miracle in 2017. He's closed out four games this season, earning one save, totaling 8.0 innings and a 1.12 ERA. Drozd has struck out five batters while giving up just one earned run on nine hits in his first year in Class A Advanced ball in the Minnesota system. He spent his first three years in the Yankees farm, spending parts of two seasons at the Class A Advanced level.

ROBERT DUGGER (RHP) – Clinton Lumberkings – Midwest League – Class A – Seattle Mariners
Dugger has made six appearances for the Clinton Lumberkings this season, finishing off five games and earning two saves. In 9.2 innings pitched, he has struck out eight, while allowing five runs on eight hits. Last week, he earned his first win at the A ball level. It is his second season in the Mariners system, spending last year in different spots in Short A ball, Rookie league and Class AAA.

HAYDEN HOWARD (LHP) – Hagerstown Suns – South Atlantic League – Class A – Washington Nationals
Howard has appeared in four games this year for the Hagerstown Suns. He's picked up one win, while pitching in 13.1 innings, allowing five runs on 13 hits. Howard has struck out 16 batters & walked three to give himself a 3.38 ERA in his first year in Class A ball. Last year, Howard spent time in Short A & Rookie League levels, pitching in 12 games over 23.1 innings.

COLT HYNES (LHP) – Tulsa Drillers – Texas League – Class AA – Los Angeles Dodgers
Hynes has pitched in four games for the Tulsa Drillers this season, putting up a 2-0 mark after starting in one contest. Over 18.0 innings, he has allowed seven runs on 20 hits, striking out 13 & issuing only one walk. Hynes returns to the Dodgers organization, spending time with Toronto, Oakland and Cleveland over the last two years, moving from AA-to-AAA-to-MLB.

TYLER NESLONY (OF) – Florida Fire Frogs – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Atlanta Braves
Neslony has played in 12 games this season for the Florida Fire Frogs. In 36 at-bats, he has 13 hits, including five doubles and two homers, with six RBI and nine runs scored. He has a .361 average to start out his second season in the minors. Last year, he played in 46 games in Class A & Rookie League play, hitting a combined .280 with 46 hits.

REID REDMAN (RHP) – Northwest Arkansas Naturals – Texas League – Class AA – Kansas City Royals
Redman has pitched in seven games this year for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. In 9.2 innings, he's struck out 12 and issued only one walk, while giving up six runs on nine hits. Redman is in his third season with the Royals organization and put together a 2-2 record last season with a 2.84 ERA across the Rookie, Class A & AA leagues.

DUSTIN RICHARDSON (LHP) – Sugar Land Skeeters – Atlantic League – Independent League
Richardson has pitched in two games for the Sugar Land Skeeters this season, finishing off one game to earn a save. In 1.2 innings pitched, he's struck out two & given up just two hits and one run. It is his second stint in the Independent League, playing for Long Island last season. He's been a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers & Angels organizations along with the Marlins & Braves, as well as playing in the majors for the Red Sox.

ZACH STEWART (RHP) – Norfolk Tides – International League – Class AAA – Baltimore Orioles
Stewart has appeared in six games this season for the Norfolk Tides, making two starts & finishing two games. In 14.1 innings pitched, he has rung up 11 opposing hitters, while giving up nine earned runs. It is Stewart's first year with the Baltimore organization, after spending the last two seasons with the NC Dinos in Korea.

COREY TAYLOR (RHP) – Binghamton Rumble Ponies – Eastern League – Class AA – New York Mets
Taylor his pitched in seven games this year for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Over 7.1 innings, Taylor has struck out seven batters and allowed only five runs, while finishing off four contests. It is the third year Taylor has been in the Mets system since 2015 and earned an invite to the program's spring training camp.

ANDRE WHEELER (LHP) – Winston-Salem Dash – Carolina League – Class A Advanced – Chicago White Sox
Wheeler has pitched in five games this year with the Winston-Salem Dash. In his third stint in Class A Advanced ball, Wheeler has put together a 2.45 ERA over 7.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out 10. Last season, he spent time with the Dash & moved up to AA ball in Birmingham, where he pitched in 19 games.

MATT WITHROW (RHP) – Mississippi Braves – Southern League – Class AA – Atlanta Braves
Withrow has made four starts this season for the Mississippi Braves, posting a 1-0 overall record. In 21.0 innings pitched, he's allowed only five runs, four earned, on nine hits, racking up 19 strikeouts for a 1.71 ERA. It is his third year in the Braves organization, moving from Danville in 2015 to Carolina last year.
