Softball Drops Midweek Battle to ACU
April 05, 2017 | Softball
Maisel ties a career high tossing six strikeouts in the loss.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Mattison Maisel tied a career-high with six strikeouts and gave up just one earned run in 6.1 innings pitched, but it wasn't enough as the Red Raiders dropped a 5-1 decision to Abilene Christian Wednesday night at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
"I think ACU played a great game," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "I think they pitch really well, they made some really great defensive plays and they put the ball in play in key situations with players on. I think they did a really good job running the bases, and they played better than us."
Â
Wednesday's game wrapped up the season series between the two schools, with Tech taking two of the three. The Red Raiders defeated ACU, 3-0, opening weekend at the CenturyLink Classic at Texas State before earning a 2-1 win in Abilene March 7.
Â
The Red Raiders opened the scoring, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when sophomore Kiana Workman grounded into a double play to the shortstop that scored senior Camaury Washington from third.
Â
Maisel's performance in the circle helped Tech maintain the one-run lead through up until the fifth inning, when ACU plated three unearned runs. Three hits and two Red Raider miscues fueled ACU's three-run fifth before Maisel was able to exit the jam with a fly ball to center field. The Wildcats would add two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to reach the final result.
Â
Behind an impressive defensive performance, the Wildcats held Tech to two hits while tallying 10 of their own in the contest.
Â
Senior Brittany Warnecke led Tech's effort at the plate, going 1-1 with a walk, reaching base safely for the seventh consecutive game. Senior Ashley Fultz collected the other hit for the Red Raiders, who move to 13-4 this season when scoring the first run of the game.
Â
The Red Raiders fall to 16-18 overall with a 3-3 mark in Big 12 play. The Wildcats, who are tied atop the Southland Conference league standings, improve to 22-14, 11-1 in the Southland Conference.
Â
"We'll bounce back," Gregory said. "We're gritty, and we'll play the game with passion. We always play the game with passion in Big 12 play, and that's not an excuse for how we played tonight. Our kids know what's on the line. We insist on making sure we play the game the right way and representing that in our house the right way."
Â
Texas Tech continues its seven-game home stand this weekend, April 7-9, at it hosts Kansas for three games at Rocky Johnson Field. First pitch for Friday's 'Heroes Game' is slated for 6 p.m.
