Bouwer Claims Conference Crown

Freshman Werner Bouwer earns first with his third throw of the day in the men’s javelin.
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Texas Tech track & field started off strong on day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Rock Chalk Park, ending the day with a conference champion title.
Freshman Werner Bouwer exerted a throw of 69.69m/228-7.75 safeguarding his conference leading position to take hold of the the Big 12 javelin crown.
This is the first time a Red Raider has won the conference javelin title since Mike Cast threw 65.10m/213-07 in 2008.
Hunter Hopkins finished behind Bouwer for All-Big 12 honors with his personal-best throw of 62.77m/205-11.25 for third.
Kaylee Hinton ended the first half of her heptathlon performance in first-place with an impressive 3,541 points.
This is a 205-point improvement from her last heptathlon showing here at Rock Chalk Park three weeks ago, where concluding the first four events she held a total of 3,336 points.
Hinton had personal-best performances in three out of her four events. She started the day with a 13.48 (+3.2w) 100-meter hurdle run. Hinton then moved on to the high jump, where she improved four-inches to a new lifetime-best of 1.79m/5-10.50. She concluded the day with her 200-meter dash of 24.01, beating her previous best of 25.06.
In the men's decathlon, Erin Lopez is sitting up top in second-place with 3,955 points overall.
Lopez had huge lifetime bests in both the high jump and the 400-meter run with his marks of 1.93m/6-4 and 49.49.
Alexis Lewis wrangled an All-Big 12 honor with her 56.33m/184-10 hammer throw for sixth overall. This is Lewis' second All-Big 12 honor this year.
Jocelyn Caro, Hattie Schunk and Miguel Bautista finished the night with their 10,000-meter runs.
Caro and Schunk finished second and tenth with their runs of 33:55.81 and 35:37.21 respectively. Bautista clocked a 30:18.77 run for eighth.
Caro's second-place finish ranks as a No. 10 all-time mark as well as a lifetime best.
The Red Raiders will continue competition tomorrow, starting with the second half of the men's and women's multi-events at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
