Steven Champlin and Viershanie Latham wrangle their first Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors.
LUBBOCK, Texas – As announced by the Big 12 Conference this afternoon, junior Steven Champlin and senior Viershanie Latham both won Athlete of the Week for their performances at the Red Raider Shootout.
Â
Champlin put together a 45.01 (converted to 45.12 with altitude) 400-meter run to claim first at the meet. This was a lifetime-best for Champlin that earned him the No. 4 nationally-ranked spot as well as the No. 7 world-ranked position.
Â
Champlin is also a part of the men's 4x400 relay that is currently ranked fifth in the nation with their 3:03.28 time.
Â
"I'm so proud of Steven and how he has finally put together a good open race," Head Coach Wes Kittley said. "He has been running fantastic relays, and this time he almost put together a perfect race and I am just so happy for him."
Â
Latham has continued to produce strong marks throughout the season in the women's jumps, with the most recent accomplishment being her 6.55m/21-6 (+3.8w) long jump mark.
Â
This was an almost foot-and-a-half lifetime-best improvement for Latham that moved her up to No. 5 in the national rankings and No. 9 in the world amongst moderately-windy marks.
Â
"I'm very pleased with how consistent Viershanie has been all year," Kittley said. "Week in and week out she is setting personal records and school records. I love how she has competed as a senior and continues to lead our team."
Â
In her last home meet Latham also took first-place in the triple jump at a 13.66m/44-9.75 (+2.3w) leap.
Â
Latham has finished first in three of her five outdoor triple jump showings this season.
Â
This weekend the Red Raiders will stay at home to host the Masked Rider Open on Saturday, May 6.
