Twenty-five former Texas Tech standouts are playing professional baseball in 2017
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball has six former standouts on major league squads in the second month of the 2017 season, with 19 more in different levels of the minor league system.

The six Red Raiders in MLB include: Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies), Daniel Coulombe (Oakland Athletics), Nathan Karns (Kansas City Royals), A.J. Ramos (Miami Marlins), Josh Tomlin (Cleveland Indians) and Kelby Tomlinson (San Francisco Giants).

Nineteen additional Red Raider standouts have started the year in the minor leagues, sprinkled throughout the ranks from Class A to AAA, as well as Independent baseball.

CHAD BETTIS – Colorado Rockies - RHP
Bettis began the season on the 60-day disabled list after needing chemotherapy to treat cancer. On Nov. 29, Bettis underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells and was deemed to be a success on Dec. 22, but in March it was determined he would need the chemotherapy to continue treatment. After finishing chemo, Bettis has rejoined the Rockies and begun workouts to return to action. Last season, Bettis led the Rockies in innings pitched with 186.0, putting together a 14-8 record.

DANIEL COULOMBE – Oakland Athletics - LHP
Coulombe has made 25 appearances this season for the A's. He's tossed 20.2 innings, allowing just seven runs, five earned, on 17 hits, while striking out 17. So far in June, he's pitched in five games, giving up just a run in one outing on June 11 at Tampa Bay. He's racked up five strikeouts, dropped his ERA to 2.18. The A's are 27-36 this year and are fifth in the A.L. Central.

NATHAN KARNS – Kansas City Royals - RHP
Karns has made nine appearances this season for the Royals, the first in relief and the last eight in a starting role. Over four starts in May, he posted a 2-0 record, with wins coming against the Chicago White Sox and on the road at Tampa Bay. In his last two outings, he's picked up no decisions after going 5.0 innings against both Baltimore and Minnesota, allowing just two runs and one run, respectively, in those two starts. The May 13th game against Baltimore marked back-to-back outings with double digit strikeout figures, posting a career-high 12 against the Orioles. This season, Karns is 2-2 with 51 strikeouts and a 4.17 ERA, putting together a 2.01 ERA during the month of May. The Royals are 28-34 this year and are fourth in the A.L. Central.

A.J. RAMOS – Miami Marlins - RHP
Ramos has made 22 appearances out of the bullpen for the Marlins this year. Over 20.2 innings pitched, Ramos has given up 10 runs, nine earned, & 14 hits, while striking out 27. Over three outings in June, he has tossed 3.1 scoreless frames, picking up saves in all three contests to bring him to 9-for-9 in save opportunities this season. This year, the Marlins are 27-35 and are fourth in the N.L. East.

JOSH TOMLIN – Cleveland Indians - RHP
Tomlin has made 12 starts this season for the Indians, posting a 3-8 record. In his first start in June against the Royals, he tossed 7.1 innings, strikeout five and allowing three runs in the Indians 4-0 loss in Kansas City. This year, he's struck out 44 batters and walked only four over 66.0 innings pitched. This season, the Indians are 31-29, trailing the lead in the A.L. Central by a-game-and-a-half.

KELBY TOMLINSON – San Francisco Giants - INF
Tomlinson was recalled to the Giants active roster on April 26. Over 39 at-bats, Tomlinson's recorded 12 hits, scoring five runs and an RBI, while putting together a .308 average at the plate. In 10 games in June, he is hitting .417 with five hits and four runs. It is his third stint with the club in as many years. Before getting the call up, Tomlinson had played in 14 games this season for the Sacramento River Cats, racking up 13 hits along with four RBI and 11 runs scored. This season, the Giants are 26-39 and are fourth in the N.L. West.

BARRETT BARNES (OF) – Indianapolis Indians – International League - Class AAA – Pittsburgh Pirates
Barnes has played in 24 games this season for the Indianapolis Indians are returning from injury. Barnes has racked up 18 hits, including seven doubles, along with 10 runs scored and eight RBI for a .247 average. The 2017 season marks Barnes' first at the AAA level, who has moved up in the Pirates organization since being drafted in 2012.

BLAKE BASS (RHP) – Down East Wood Ducks – Carolina League - Class A Advanced – Texas Rangers
Bass has pitched in six games in 2017, picking up a win and a save for the Down East Wood Ducks. Over 11.0 innings, Bass has given up 15 hits and 10 runs, six earned, while striking out five. Last season, Bass was 6-3 with two saves in 36 appearances in Class A ball for the Hickory Crawdads. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list on April 26.

DALTON BROWN (RHP) – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – Midwest League – Class A – Milwaukee Brewers
Brown has made two appearances this season for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Over 3.2 innings, he's struck out two, while giving up six earned runs. Last season, Brown finished 1-1 with one save in 12 outings in Rookie League play with the Helena Brewers and the Arizona League Brewers. On May 5, he was assigned to the Helena Brewers.

SHANE BROYLES (RHP) – Hartford Yard Goats – Eastern League – Class AA – Colorado Rockies
Broyles has pitched in 19 games this year for the Hartford Yard Goats. He's finished 11 games, earning three saves, while racking up 34 strikeouts over 25.0 innings. He's allowed only six runs, five earned, on 16 hits in his second year with the club for a 2.16 ERA. During the month of June, Broyles has allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings of work, striking out eight, including a four-strikeout day on June 4. Last season, he appeared in 36 games, picking up one save and 69 strikeouts in Class AA play.

MATT CUSTRED (RHP) – Rome Braves – South Atlantic League – Class A – Atlanta Braves
Custred has made five appearances in 2017 for the Rome Braves. In 10.2 innings, he's allowed only one earned run and six hits, while ringing up 14 opposing hitters. He sits with a 0.84 ERA early into his second season in Rome at Class A ball. Last season, Custred made 40 appearances, posting a 5-3 record with two saves, striking out 64 over 56.2 innings pitched. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list on April 26.

TY DAMRON (LHP) – Beloit Snappers – Midwest League – Class A – Oakland Athletics
Damron has made five starts and 11 total appearances for the Beloit Snappers this season. He picked up a save in his first non-start of the year on April 15. He's totaled 37.0 innings, striking out 40 batters for a 5.11 ERA and 3-4 record.

ZACH DAVIS (OF) – South Bend Cubs – Midwest League – Class A – Chicago Cubs
Davis was assigned to the South Bend Cubs on May 22, playing in four games in the Midwest League. A week later, he was assigned to Cubs Extended Spring Training.

JONNY DROZD (LHP) – Fort Myers Miracle – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Minnesota Twins
Drozd has pitched in 14 games for the Fort Myers Miracle in 2017. He's closed out eight games this season, earning three saves, totaling 21.2 innings and a 3.32 ERA. Drozd has struck out 16 batters while giving up just eight earned runs on 26 hits in his first year in Class A Advanced ball in the Minnesota system. He spent his first three years in the Yankees farm, spending parts of two seasons at the Class A Advanced level.

ROBERT DUGGER (RHP) – Clinton Lumberkings – Midwest League – Class A – Seattle Mariners
Dugger has made 16 appearances for the Clinton Lumberkings this season, finishing off nine games and earning two saves. In 38.0 innings pitched, he has struck out 36, while allowing 10 runs on 26 hits, giving him a 2.37 ERA. Dugger has recorded scoreless performances in each of his last four outings, giving up just six hits and striking out 15 over 12.2 frames of work. It is his second season in the Mariners system, spending last year in different spots in Short A ball, Rookie league and Class AAA. On Wednesday, he was named to the Midwest League All-Star team.

ERIC GUTIERREZ (INF) – Greensboro Grasshoppers – South Atlantic League – Class A – Miami Marlins
Gutierrez began his 2017 season on April 29 and has played in 29 games this season for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Over 103 at-bats, Gutierrez has 26 hits, including seven doubles and one homer, as well as 17 runs scored and 11 RBI for a .252 average. This year marks his first full year in the Marlins system, as he moved from Rookie League to Short A ball in 2016 after completing his collegiate career.

HAYDEN HOWARD (LHP) – Hagerstown Suns – South Atlantic League – Class A – Washington Nationals
Howard has appeared in 14 games this year for the Hagerstown Suns, starting one and finishing off five. He's off to a 4-0 start over 37.1 innings pitched, giving up 21 earned runs and striking out 38 for a 5.06 ERA in his first year in Class A ball. He has given up just two earned runs over his last five outings, striking out 12 in the process. Last year, Howard spent time in Short A & Rookie League levels, pitching in 12 games over 23.1 innings.

COLT HYNES (LHP) – Tulsa Drillers – Texas League – Class AA – Los Angeles Dodgers
Hynes has pitched in 15 games for the Tulsa Drillers this season, putting up a 4-1 mark after starting in four contests. Over 41.0 innings, he has allowed 15 runs on 44 hits, striking out 30 & issuing only seven walks. He has not given up a run in three of his last four appearances on the mound for the Drillers. Hynes returns to the Dodgers organization, spending time with Toronto, Oakland and Cleveland over the last two years, moving from AA-to-AAA-to-MLB.

RYAN MOSELEY (RHP) – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes – California League – Class A Advanced – Los Angeles Dodgers
On Feb. 19, Moseley was traded from the Baltimore Orioles organization to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he has been assigned back-and-forth to the Dodgers Extended Spring Training team to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes over the last month. Now back with the Quakes, Moseley has pitched in nine games, putting together a 2.83 ERA over 28.2 innings pitched. He's struck out 18 while allowing just nine earned runs. After wrapping up his college career in 2016, Moseley spent 12 games with the Aberdeen IronBirds in Short-Season A ball in the Orioles organization.

TYLER NESLONY (OF) – Florida Fire Frogs – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Atlanta Braves
Neslony has played in 44 games this season for the Florida Fire Frogs. In 156 at-bats, he has 50 hits, including 16 doubles and three homers, with 18 RBI and 22 runs scored. He has a .321/.391/.481 line to start out his second season in the minors. Last year, he played in 46 games in Class A & Rookie League play, hitting a combined .280 with 46 hits.

DUSTIN RICHARDSON (LHP) – Sugar Land Skeeters – Atlantic League – Independent League
Richardson has pitched in 24 games for the Sugar Land Skeeters this season, finishing off three games to earn two saves. In 17.2 innings pitched, he's struck out 26 & given up just 11 hits and six runs, five earned, for a 2.55 ERA. It is his second stint in the Independent League, playing for Long Island last season. He's been a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers & Angels organizations along with the Marlins & Braves, as well as playing in the majors for the Red Sox.

COREY TAYLOR (RHP) – Binghamton Rumble Ponies – Eastern League – Class AA – New York Mets
Taylor his pitched in 20 games this year for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Over 26.2 innings, Taylor has struck out 21 batters and allowed only 10 runs, while finishing off nine contests for three saves, for a 3.38 ERA. It is the third year Taylor has been in the Mets system since 2015 and earned an invite to the program's spring training camp.

DUKE VON SCHAMANN (RHP) – Joliet Slammers – Frontier League – Independent League
Schamann has made four starts for the Joliet Slammers this season, putting up a 1-2 record. Over 25.2 innings pitched, he's recorded 13 strikeouts, while allowing 14 earned runs for a 4.91 ERA. Schamann has spent time in the Indians and Dodgers organization from 2012-15, while spending the last two seasons playing in the Independent league.

ANDRE WHEELER (LHP) – Winston-Salem Dash – Carolina League – Class A Advanced – Chicago White Sox
Wheeler has pitched in 13 games this year with the Winston-Salem Dash. In his third stint in Class A Advanced ball, Wheeler has struck out 24 over 21.1 innings, allowing 16 runs. Last season, he spent time with the Dash & moved up to AA ball in Birmingham, where he pitched in 19 games. On May 29, he was placed on the seven-day disabled list, retroactive to May 27.

MATT WITHROW (RHP) – Mississippi Braves – Southern League – Class AA – Atlanta Braves
Withrow has made 10 starts this season for the Mississippi Braves, posting a 1-3 overall record. In 48.1 innings pitched, he's struck out 44 and put together a 4.47 ERA. It is his third year in the Braves organization, moving from Danville in 2015 to Carolina last year. On June 7, he was placed on the seven-day disabled list.

Withrow has made 10 starts this season for the Mississippi Braves, posting a 1-3 overall record. In 48.1 innings pitched, he's struck out 44 and put together a 4.47 ERA. It is his third year in the Braves organization, moving from Danville in 2015 to Carolina last year. On June 7, he was placed on the seven-day disabled list.
