Red Raiders Wrap Day Two of Nationals
June 09, 2017 | Track and Field
Two freshmen experience the national stage and a senior concludes a great season.
EUGENE, Oregon – The Red Raiders concluded the second day of the NCAA Championships with two freshman debuts and one senior finale race.
"People don't realize how tough a meet this is," Head Coach Wes Kittley said. "It was really good to get those young girls out there and in the battle. They got to come out here and experience what it takes to compete at this level."
Day two ended with Sara Limp, Marika Brown, Taylor Rockwell and Maygen Smith clocking an honorable mention 3:39.16 preliminary mile-relay that served as the 19th-place finish.
"That was one of the faster races I've seen overall, and when you get behind in a race like that it takes a lot to come back. But the girls went out there and didn't quit."
In the women's 10,000-meter race, Jocelyn Caro clocked a time of 34:16.15 for a No. 20 overall finish for honorable mention honors.
"Jocelyn also went in a fast race which was tough. She had a great senior year overall and we're proud of how she has improved throughout the year."
Viershanie Latham and Zuliat Alli placed 21st and 23rd overall in the women's long jump.
"Zu as a freshman got her first experience in a tough meet. I'm proud she got here and hopefully she learned from it."
Both had best marks on their second attempts of 5.90m/19-4.25 and 5.73m/18-9.75 respectively.
"Viershanie didn't have her best day, but she got some kinks out and will hopefully use this as a drive and be more confident for the triple jump on Saturday."
Latham will compete in the women's triple jump, her second and final event, on Saturday at 3:40 p.m. PT.
Four events will take place on day three of the NCAA Championships with Kaylee Hinton starting the day off in the women's heptathlon at 12:30 p.m. Following Hinton is Trey Culver in the high jump at 5 p.m., Benard Keter in the 3,000m steeplechase finals at 5:54 p.m. and the men's 4x400 finals at 7:51 p.m.
