Each week, texastech.com recaps the performances of Red Raiders currently playing in the NFL. The 2017 season opened with a couple solid performances from Red Raider receivers playing for the Patriots and Raiders.
Anthony Lynn - Head Coach, Los Angeles Chargers
Week 1 Matchup: Denver 24, Los Angeles 21
In Lynn's first game as a full-time head coach, the Chargers nearly pulled off an incredible comeback at Denver, scoring 14 late points and getting in position to tie the game at the end of regulation, but the Chargers' field goal was blocked. Lynn was a Red Raider running back from 1988-1991, and was an All-SWC selection in 1990 … He was also a member of the back-to-back Super Bowl Champion Denver broncos in 1997 & 1998.Â
Danny Amendola - Wide Receiver, New England Patriots
Week 1 Matchup: Kansas City 42, New England 27
In the absence of Julian Edelman, it was thought Amendola would have a bigger role in week one, and he delivered, hauling in six catches for 100 yards against Kansas City before leaving the game due to an injury. Amendola has caught 371 passes for 3,552 yards and scored 17 touchdowns in his NFL career … On top of that, he has hauled in four career postseason touchdowns, including scores in both Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LI … Amendola was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2008.
Le'Raven Clark - Offensive Lineman, Indianapolis Colts
Week 1 Matchup: Los Angeles 46, Indianapolis 9
Clark logged three special teams snaps in what was a tough day all around for the Colts, a 46-9 loss to the Rams. Clark was the first of three Red Raiders to hear their names called in the 2016 NFL draft, going at No. 82 overall … Clark started all 51 games of his Red Raider career, and his senior year he was named a CBS Sports second team All-American ... He was the third-round pick of the Colts in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Michael Crabtree -Â Wide Receiver, Oakland Raiders
Week 1 Matchup: Oakland 26, Tennessee 16
Crabtree recorded team highs in receptions (6) and yards (83) as Oakland began the season with a big road win at Tennessee. He now has 527 receptions for 6,335 yards and 43 regular-season touchdowns in his professional career … Crabtree played two seasons at Texas Tech (2007-08), where he became the first receiver in collegiate history to win the Biletnikoff Award twice, before the 49ers selected him with the 10th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft.
Cody Davis -Â Defensive Back, Los Angeles Rams
Week 1 Matchup: Los Angeles 46, Indianapolis 9
Davis played on nearly half of the available defensive snaps in L.A.'s big win over the Colts, as well as an extra 26 special teams snaps ... Davis was a four-year letterman with the Red Raiders (2009-12) and then signed as an undrafted free agent with the Rams in 2013.
Jakeem Grant -Â Wide Receiver, Miami Dolphins
Week 1 Matchup: BYE
Due to Hurricane Irma, Grant and the Dolphins' bye week was moved to week 1. Grant enters the regular season coming off a strong preseason, including a couple long TD receptions ... Grant was Miami's sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft after a senior year at Tech in which he averaged 181 all-purpose yards per game which ranked fourth nationally, and ranked fourth nationally with 1,017 kickoff return yards and fifth with two kickoff return touchdowns … CBS Sports tabbed him as a second team All-American.
Kerry Hyder, Jr. - Defensive Line, Detroit Lions
Week 1 Matchup: Detroit 35, Arizona 23
After a breakout performance in 2016, where he led the Lions in sacks, Hyder suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the 2017 season. Hyder joined the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2014 after a Red Raider career which included a litany of All-Big 12 honors in 2013 and 2014.
Patrick Mahomes II - Quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs
Week 1 Matchup: Kansas City 42, New England 27
The 10th overall pick of the 2017 draft turned heads during the preseason and earned the No. 2 QB job as a rookie behind Alex Smith, who torched the Patriots for 368 yards and four TDs in a resounding week one win ... Mahomes was the 10th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft after a 2016 season in which he won the Sammy Baugh Award, led the FBS in total touchdowns and set FBS single-game record for passing yards and total offense.
Bradley Marquez - Wide Receiver, Los Angeles Rams
Week 1 Matchup: Los Angeles 46, Indianapolis 9
After injuring his knee in a preseason game, Marquez cleared waivers and has been placed on injured reserve by the Rams ... Marquez played four seasons at Texas Tech (2010-14) before the Rams signed him as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2015.
La'Adrian Waddle - Offensive Lineman, New England Patriots
Week 1 Matchup: Kansas City 42, New England 27
Waddle saw action on 13 snaps in Thursday's opener, mostly as an extra lineman in short-yardage situations, in New England's loss to Kansas City ... Waddle played four seasons at Tech (2009-12) before being signed by the Lions as an undrafted free agent.
DeAndre Washington - Running back, Oakland Raiders
Week 1 Matchup: Oakland 26, Tennessee 16
After a rookie season in which he became one of the NFL's best change-of-pace backs, Washington began 2017 with 22 total yards from scrimmage in Oakland's week-one victory over Tennessee ... Washington was the first Red Raider running back to register back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons since former Doak Walker Award winner Byron Hanspard in 1995 and 1996 ... one of five players in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards twice in a career.
Davis Webb - Quarterback, New York Giants
Week 1 Matchup: Dallas 19, New York 3
Webb begins his rookie season as the No. 3 QB on the Giants' depth chart. He did not record a snap in Sunday's loss ... Webb was the 87th pick (3rd round) of the 2017 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, after a collegiate career that included three years at Texas Tech, two as the starting quarterback. Set a school record with at least one TD pass in each of the first 18 starts of his career.
