Danny Amendola recorded his first career 100-yard game in the playoffs Saturday versus Tennessee
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech great Danny Amendola recorded his first career 100-yard game in the playoffs Saturday night to help lead the New England Patriots to a 35-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans at a cold Gillette Stadium.
Amandola caught 11 passes for 112 yards as the Patriots advanced to the AFC Championship Game for the seventh-straight season and fifth with Amendola on the roster. The Patriots will await the winner of Sunday's game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to Pro Football Reference, Amendola is just the seventh Patriots player all-time to record a 10-catch, 100-yard performance in a playoff game, joining the likes of fellow Red Raider Wes Welker as well as Deion Branch, Jabar Gafffney and teammates Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski and James White.
Amendola caught all seven of his targets in the opening half, resulting in 62 yards. He was targeted 13 times on the night to help push the Patriots to 35 unanswered points thanks in part to 11 third-down conversions, five of which were passes to Amendola.
Possibly the highlight of a frigid night came on a 3rd-and-10 conversion early in the fourth quarter when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady found Amendola on the opposite side of the field off an off-balanced throw that fell perfectly into the leaping hands of Amendola. New England scored its final touchdown a few plays later on a four-yard pass from Brady to Gronkowski.
The duo of Amendola and Gronkowski made national news several weeks ago when the pair teamed up to surprise Red Raider defensive back Justus Parker with a scholarship during a team meeting. The video, which was tweeted by head coach Kliff Kingsbury, drew thousands of hits on social media as well as the attention of ESPN, Sports Illustrated and more.
Amendola was joined in the starting lineup by fellow Red Raider alum La'Adrian Waddle, who earned the start at right tackle. Waddle's first career start in the playoffs was cut short by an injury he suffered in the third quarter.
CBS will air next Sunday's game between the Patriots and either the Jaguars or Steelers. Kickoff is slated for 2:05 p.m. CT from Foxboro.
