January 17, 2018 | Track and Field
Senior high jumper Trey Culver earns his second Athlete of the Week award this week.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior high jumper Trey Culver was named Athlete of the Week by the Big 12 Conference for his standout performance this past weekend at the Corky Classic. Â
This marks Culver's second weekly accolade this week and second weekly award from the Big 12 in his career.
Culver totaled seven first-attempt clearances on his eight cleared heights. The Lubbock local secured the Texas Tech All-Time record not only once, but twice in this series of jumps, ending at a lifetime-best 2.33m/7-7.75 bar. He notched three lifetime bests throughout his performance before his final clearance.
To top it off, Culver achieved this new record height in front of former teammates and previous All-Time record holders, JaCorian Duffield and Bradley Adkins. Adkins, a Texas Tech Olympian, was competing against Culver in the competition as an unattached entry.
"It's a blessing," Culver explained.  "To be able to perform in front of all of my friends and family and for Corky. It was just an awesome feeling. All glory to God."
Culver's final height stands as the fourth-best high jump clearance in NCAA history and the highest jump in the NCAA since 2013.
Culver took over half of the top-10 high jump performances of this last week, claiming five spots in the USTFCCCA list.
Â
Next up, the Tech will host its second meet of the season, the Red Raider Invitational, on Friday, January 19 starting at 10 a.m. at the Sports Performance Center. Â
