Ramirez, Dominguez Gunning For Masters Berth In Chile
January 19, 2018 | Men's Golf
SANTIAGO, Chile- With a chance to play in the 2018 Masters on the line, two Red Raiders, one of which is on the current roster, are competing this weekend at the Latin America Amateur Championship, at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile.
Â
Junior Ivan Ramirez and Tech alumnus Matias Dominguez have each been invited to compete. The winner of the tournament will be invited to play in The Masters, at Augusta National, in April.
Â
As a Red Raider senior, Dominguez won the 2015 tournament (-11) and earned a place in the Masters, becoming the first Texas Tech golfer in history to do so. He made a splash at Augusta, getting an ace on the fourth hole of the Par-3 challenge, a hole he halved with the legendary Jack Nicklaus.
Â
Native to Santiago, Chile, Dominguez will also be playing in his hometown.
Â
"It will be surreal," Dominguez said, when asked about playing at home. "I'm really looking forward to the chance to represent my city and country on the biggest stage. It would be great to win in front of my friends and family."
Â
After earning All-Big 12 Championship honors a year ago, and as a veteran to multiple NCAA regionals, Ramirez has proved he is able to perform under pressure.
Â
"This is such a great experience for Ivan to get to play in this tournament again, especially right before our spring season begins," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "He could really use this tournament to springboard himself into a great start this year. As always, it's so great for our program to have Matias playing at this event, knowing what he has accomplished there in the past. It's awesome to see those guys compete."
Â
Dominguez will tee off at 8:18 a.m. CT, off the No. 10 tee, and Ramirez will begin his tournament off the first tee at 12:26 p.m. CT.
Â
Complete coverage will be available live on ESPN2, the WatchESPN app, and streaming live on the official event website, LAACgolf.com. The first round begins Saturday at 12 p.m. CT, and the second round tees off at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday. Third and fourth-round coverage will start at 9 a.m. CT. on Monday and Tuesday.
