Patrick Mahomes II and the Chiefs kick off the NFL Wild Card round at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Kansas City
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will have three former Red Raiders participating in the NFL playoffs over the next few weeks, beginning Saturday when Patrick Mahomes II and the Kansas City Chiefs host the Tennessee Titans.
Â
Mahomes, who will move back to his backup quarterback role for the wild card game, helped engineer a late game-winning drive to lead the Chiefs (10-6) to a 27-24 victory over the Broncos this past weekend in Denver. Mahomes finished 22-of-35 overall for 284 yards in his first career start.
Â
Kickoff between the Chiefs and Titans is slated for 3:30 p.m. CT Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Television coverage will be provided nationally on ESPN as the Monday Night Football crew of Sean McDonough, Jon Gruden, Lisa Salters and Adam Schefter will have the call.
Â
If the Chiefs move past the Titans, Mahomes will face a pair of fellow Red Raider alums in Danny Amendola and La'Adrian Waddle of the New England Patriots. New England closed the regular season at 13-3 overall, earning home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.
Â
Amendola, now in his fifth season with the Patriots and ninth in the NFL, has caught 61 passes so far this season for 659 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also serving as New England's primary punt returner. He is averaging 8.6 yards on 27 returns this season, his most since attempting 40 with the then St. Louis Rams in 2010.
Â
His 61 receptions and 659 receiving yards this season mark his most since joining the Patriots prior to the 2013 campaign. Amendola now has 426 receptions for 4,109 yards and 19 touchdowns over his illustrious NFL career.
Â
Waddle, meanwhile, has appeared in 12 games this year for the Patriots, while making four starts at right tackle, all of which resulted in victories. Waddle's 12 games played this season match his career high since he began his NFL career with the Detroit Lions in 2013. He has 28 career starts during that span as well.
Â
New England's divisional round game against either the Chiefs or Titans is slated for a 7:15 p.m. CT kickoff Jan. 13 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. Television coverage that night will be provided nationally on CBS.
