February 19, 2018 | Track and Field
The men’s program keeps hold of their first-place USTFCCCA ranking heading into the conference championship.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's track & field program maintained their first-place ranking in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association indoor rankings. Â
This is the second-straight week in which the Red Raiders have held this No. 1 spot, matching the Lady Raider basketball program's back-to-back weekly rankings in January of 2004
. Â
The Red Raiders have racked up a total of 20 top-25 national marks in the first six weeks of competition.
Two marks were added to the computer rankings from last weekend's Matador Qualifier meet.
Notching a No. 2 all-time Texas Tech mark was pole vaulter Drew McMichael, clearing his personal-best of 5.50m/18-0.50. This bar ties Brandon Bray for the No. 10 nationally ranked spot. This was McMichael's first 18-foot clearance since the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, where he notched a new school record height of 5.51m/18-0.75.Â
Â
Running his first 800-meter race this season was C.J. Jones. The senior ran a 17th ranked 800m time of 1:48.98, converted to 1:48.67 at altitude, for a first-place finish at the meet.
Â
This weekend, Tech will be heading to the Big 12 Indoor Championship in Ames, Iowa, starting Friday at 10 a.m. with the pentathlon. The Red Raiders will be hunting for their first Big 12 title since 2014, and first ever indoor conference title.Â
