Nilehn Included On Haskins Award Watch List

Texas Tech senior Fredrik Nilehn was named to the Fred Haskins Award watch list Thursday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior golfer Fredrik Nilehn was named to the initial watch list for the prestigious Fred Haskins Award on Thursday, which is presented to the top collegiate golfer in the country.
A native of Goteborg, Sweden, Nilehn is currently ranked 10th nationally among in the latest Golfstat poll as he is averaging 69.4 strokes per round this season. He has recorded top-10 finishes in three of Tech's five tournaments this season, which includes this past weekend's Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate where he shared medalist honors.
He has also registered top-15 finishes in each of Tech's five tournaments this season.
Nilehn's play has helped lead the Red Raiders to four runner-up finishes as a team already this season as Tech is ranked eighth nationally by Golfstat. Tech has finished second in both of their tournaments so far this spring at the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii and then the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Springs, California.
Nilehn, who is also a member of the Ben Hogan Award watch list, is one of 20 early candidates for the Haskins Award, which is voted on annually by various Division-I players, coaches and select golf media.
Previous winners of the Haskins Award include notables such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Ben Crenshaw and Luke Donald. The award is named in honor of Fred Haskins, who dedicated his career to the sport of golf while serving as the head professional at the Country Club of Columbus.
The Red Raiders return to the links March 6 when Tech tees off at the Southern Highlands Masters in Las Vegas. The three-day tournament will be the first of two events in a seven-day stretch as Tech will also take part in the Lampkin San Diego Classic on March 12-13.
