Texas Tech will run 100-120 plays Saturday in a 1 p.m. scrimmage at Grande Communications Stadium
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech football program will return to Midland for a sixth-consecutive year Saturday afternoon when the Red Raiders host a 1 p.m. scrimmage at Grande Communications Stadium.
Â
Admission is free for all fans as parking lots will open at 8 a.m. for tailgaters. Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury and his staff will run the Red Raiders through roughly 100-120 plays during Saturday's scrimmage, which will not feature a scoring format or a game clock.
Â
The scrimmage in Midland annually draws thousands of Red Raiders fans as the Permian Basin region boasts one of the university's largest alumni groups. The region is also home to a pair of Red Raiders in Desmon Smith and Jax Welch, who both hail from nearby Odessa and Permian High School.
Â
In addition, the Permian Basin has provided several standouts on the gridiron in recent years, including the likes of Baron Batch and Bradley Marquez, who both earned their degrees from Tech and moved on to NFL careers. Marquez is currently entering his first full season with the Detroit Lions after he signed with the organization this past November following two-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.
Â
The Midland scrimmage kicks off the first of three opportunities to catch the Red Raiders this spring as Tech will also travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex on April 7 for a scrimmage at The Star in Frisco, the official team headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys. Tech ends spring practice April 14 with the annual Spring Game at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Â
Representatives from the Texas Tech Ticket Office will be on hand Saturday to help fans purchase season tickets for the upcoming 2018 season. Season tickets are now on sale for as low as $190 a person and can be purchased online or by calling 806-742-TECH.
Â
Fans in Midland will get another opportunity to support the Red Raiders on April 3 when the Tech baseball program hosts New Mexico State at Security Bank Ballpark. First pitch against the Aggies is slated for 7 p.m. as tickets are currently on sale through the Midland RockHounds.
Â
The Red Raider Club was originally slated to host an event Friday night in conjunction with this weekend's scrimmage. That event has been postponed so Red Raider fans can enjoy Friday night's Sweet 16 game between the Tech men's basketball program and Purdue.
