Texas Tech combined to shoot 27-over-par Friday afternoon at the Dallas Athletic Club
DALLAS – The Texas Tech women's golf team strung together 18 birdies Friday afternoon to close the opening day of the Big 12 Championships in sixth place following 36 holes at the Dallas Athletic Club.
Â
The Red Raiders combined to shoot 27-over-par during the two rounds as Tech posted an 18-over 306 to start the tournament and then followed with a 9-over 297 later in the afternoon. The 9-over card matched the third lowest of the second round.
Â
Top-seeded Texas claimed the opening-day lead at 11-over, one stroke better than Baylor in second place and two swings in front of Oklahoma State in third. Oklahoma and Iowa State rounded out the top five of the standings at 17-over and 18-over, respectively.
Â
Mami Yamamoto recorded the lowest two-round score among the Red Raiders as the junior finished 6-over on the day, pushing her into a tie for 15th place. Yamamoto, backed by four birdies, fired an even-par 72 to open the tournament, which matched Louisa Brunt for the lowest round of the day for Tech's five-player lineup.
Â
Brunt's even-par round came in the afternoon as she sank three birdies and an important eagle to move into a tie for 19th alongside teammate Gabby Barker, just a stroke behind Yamamoto. Brunt, playing in her first conference tournament, was one of just seven players in the field to record an eagle.
Â
Barker signed for a 1-over second round after draining six of her nine birdies on the day. Barker, who has top-10 finishes in each of the last three tournaments, notched nine birdies over the two rounds, one shy of Oklahoma's Hannah Wood for the tournament high.
Â
Lauren Mason, meanwhile, added a 2-over card during the second round to finish the day at 10-over and in a tie for 28th individually. Amy Taylor completed the Tech lineup one stroke back of Mason in a tie for 30th place.
Â
The Red Raiders ranked second among the nine-team field for birdies as Tech had 33 over the two rounds, eight of which coming from Taylor who is tied for third among the 45-player field. Baylor leads the tournament with 34 birdies.
Â
Tech will be paired with Iowa State and Baylor in the 9 a.m. tee group when play resumes Sunday morning. Live scoring will be available throughout the round at Golfstat.com.
