Red Raiders 15 shots back, but still have 36 holes to go at the Big 12 Championship
TULSA, Okla. – The No. 12 Texas Tech Men's Golf team sits in sixth place after an up-and-down first day at the 2018 Big 12 Championship, in Tulsa, Okla., at Southern Hills Country Club.
The Red Raiders (+24) are 15 shots off the lead, but there are still 36 holes to be played. For reference, at last year's NCAA College Grove Regional, Tech started the final round 15 shots off the cutline and nearly erased that deficit immediately by going -8 over the course of the first nine holes.
Unranked Iowa State (+9) is the surprise leader, followed by No. 3 Oklahoma (+11), No. 1 Oklahoma State (+14), No. 14 Texas (+17) and No. 10 Baylor (+21).
It was a rocky start for the Red Raiders off the 10th tee, going 6-over on the first three holes, a trio at which the other teams in the field played closer to even par. However, Tech began to claw back with a pair of birdies on both No. 13 and No. 16.
Heading into the turn at 18, Tech was as many as 10 shots off the lead. From there, the Red Raiders proceeded to play holes 1-5 at 6-over, which was a few shots better than the majority of the field, evening out the damage done early in the round.
Adam Blomme snagged birdies on No. 5 and No. 7, a sequence in which Tech rocketed up the leaderboard, getting as close as two shots away from the top spot.
Blomme was one of two Red Raiders in the top 10 after round one, with his 2-over 72. Hurly Long joined him after round one, tied for 10th at +3.
After a brief hiatus, Tech began round two in the fashion in which it hoped. Early birdies on holes 1, 2, 4 and 5 brought the Red Raiders right back up near the top of the leaderboard.
From there, Tech pulled into a tie for second place after Ivan Ramirez sank a 20-footer for birdie on No. 7 and then chipped in for birdie on No. 8.
Tech continued to trade bogeys and birdies until hole No. 16, which started a rough stretch to end the day. Tech went a collective 6-over on the final three holes of the day, dropping to +24 for the tournament, in sixth place.
Individually, Blomme (+5) is the low man for Tech at this point, tied for 14th place. Ramirez (+6) is tied for 23rd after his second-round 71. Kyle Hogan and Hurly Long (+7) are tied for 28th. Long began the second round by going -1 over the first 11 holes, but finished with three bogeys and a double bogeys in the remainder of his day.
Sandy Scott (+9) is tied for 37th, after a second-round 73.
The Red Raiders will once again be paired with Baylor tomorrow, teeing off at 8:45 a.m., on hole No. 1.
