No. 12 Tech Takes Seventh At Big 12 Championship
April 25, 2018 | Men's Golf
TULSA, Okla. – The No. 12 Texas Tech Men's Golf team went 13-over par during a rainy final round of the 2018 Big 12 Championship, at Southern Hills Country Club, in Tulsa, Okla.
Tech (+51) finished in seventh place at a tournament featuring seven teams ranked in Golfstat's national top 45, despite playing without Ben Hogan Award Semifinalist Fredrik Nilehn.
"We made progress today," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "We haven't been sharp all week, and that's always the difference between winning and losing, but the guys didn't give up. It wasn't the low round of the day, but it was a competitive one. For having to drop Hurly [Long]'s score, which sometimes that happens for the person in your No. 1 slot, I thought it was a solid round by the guys. I'm confident we will able to bounce back in regionals, based on the positives I saw today.."
The Red Raiders were strong early, playing close to even par throughout the opening nine holes of the day, but the final three holes of the day again caused problems. Tech went +6 on holes No. 7-9, bringing its total to +21 on the final three holes of the round for the tournament.
Adam Blomme, who was a steady presence all week, finished his tournament as the low man for the Red Raiders by carding a 2-over 72 to tie for 18th, at +10.
Kyle Hogan finished up a pretty impressive Red Raider postseason debut with a 72. He went 75-72-75-72 (+14) to tie for 28th.
Ivan Ramirez (+15) carded a 75 to finish tied for 31st, Sandy Scott (+16) recorded a 74 to tie for 33rd and Hurly Long registered a 78 to finish in a tie for 40th, at 19-over.
The Red Raiders will now wait to learn their postseason destination. A regional berth will mark the 17th-straight NCAA postseason appearance for Tech men's golf, which will become a Tech Athletics record for the longest postseason streak by a program in school history.
The NCAA Regional Championships Selection Show will be held on May 2, at 4:30 p.m., and will be televised by the Golf Channel.
