Tech Golf Vaults Into Top 5 On Day Two In Columbus

The Red Raiders go 4-over in round two, moving into qualifying position
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13 Texas Tech men's golf team moved into qualifying position by carding the third-lowest team round of the day on Tuesday at the NCAA Columbus Regional.
The Red Raiders (+17) head into Wednesday's final round in fifth place, two shots behind fourth-place Northwestern, but also three shots clear of sixth-place Penn State. The top five teams at the conclusion of tomorrow's round will advance to the NCAA Championships.
"We did some things a lot better today," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "I saw some fight and resolve. I saw a lot of the right things and better execution. You aren't going to be perfect out here, but we did some things you just have to do on this course. If we play the way we should, I don't think it will be close. From what I saw today, I have a lot of confidence in these guys."
Once again, Hurly Long was sensational for the Red Raiders. He carded a 1-under 70 for the second-straight day, and is tied for second on the individual leaderboard, at -2. His round included some great putts, most notably a 20-footer for birdie on No. 18 as he made the turn.
Long was joined in the under-par ranks by Adam Blomme, who also shot a 70 from the No. 5 spot. Blomme is tied for 10th individually, at 1-over par. He punctuated his round with late back-to-back birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 to help keep the team's three-shot cushion over the cutline.
"Adam has continued to improve, and he's learning some of the small things," Sands said. "[Coach] Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen has been on his bag for a while now, and I think that's helped him mature. His talent level is off the charts, and I think everything else is starting to catch up."
Big 12 Player of the Year Fredrik Nilehn bounced back from his opening-round 78 with a 2-over 73. His round featured four birdies, one of which was a near hole-in-one on No. 13, where he was able to just tap in to finish the hole.
Sandy Scott carded a 40 on his opening nine, but bounced back in a huge way with four birdies on his final nine, including two of the final three holes of his day. He ended up with a 4-over 75, making some big shots at the end of the day to positively affect the team score.
The Red Raiders will once again tee off at 7 a.m. CT tomorrow, off the 10th tee, paired with No. 6 seed Northwestern and No. 7 seed Penn State.
The top four individual scores of the five participants each day will count toward the overall team score. The top five teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 25-30, at Karsten Creek, in Stillwater, Okla.
