Softball Closes Regular Season at UTEP Thursday
May 02, 2018 | Softball
Red Raiders and Miners will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. CT.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team takes its five game win streak to El Paso, Texas, where it will close its regular season with a doubleheader at UTEP on Thursday, starting at 1 p.m. from Helen of Troy Field.
Â
The Red Raiders (26-24, 5-13 Big 12) and Miners (18-31, 7-13 C-USA) added the doubleheader to their respective schedules in April due to early-season cancellations for both teams.
Â
Tech has its bye week for Big 12 play this weekend before gearing up for the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship next week in Oklahoma City. The Red Raiders will head to the tournament as the five or six seed depending on the results of the Iowa State-Kansas series this weekend.
Â
One of the youngest teams in the nation, Tech enters the contest with five straight wins following Tuesday's run-rule victory over Abilene Christian in its 2018 home finale. Key to the streak has been a clean defense that has gone four straight games without committing an error for the program's best stretch since 2012.
Â
Sophomore Kassidy Scott (10-9) has picked up three complete-game wins during the streak, including Tuesday against the Wildcats. The Piedmont, Okla., native has won each of her last four decisions and now boasts back-to-back 10-win seasons.
Â
Big 12 Player of the Week Karli Hamilton extended her hitting streak to 11 games on Tuesday with a 1-for-3 performance. Meanwhile, junior Jessica Hartwell remains one home run shy of matching the school record for home runs in a season of 17. As a team, Tech is one triple away from setting a program record for most triples in a season at 18.
Â
UTEP has lost five in a row entering Thursday after sweeps by Ole Miss and Middle Tennessee State. Courtney Clayton leads the team in batting (.394), home runs (7) and RBI (29). Julia Wright (5-16) sports the team's top ERA at 4.81, however, Kira McKechnie leads the team in wins at 9-10 for the year.
Â
The Red Raiders swept a pair of meetings against UTEP at the Texas Tech Invitational last season and lead the overall series, 8-4. The Red Raiders posted an 8-0 five-inning shutout on March 3 before taking a 12-4 win on March 4 in six innings. El Paso has provided a challenge for Tech, however, as UTEP owns a 4-1 advantage in the Sun City, including a doubleheader sweep in 2015. This will mark the first time the two teams have played in the month of May.
