Student-athletes success on the field is a match in the classroom
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics had every sport easily above the mandated 930 mark in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Institutional Report, while 11-of-15 university programs improved or maintained its multi-year APR from last year.Â
Â
"Texas Tech Athletics has always been committed to student-athletes' academic achievement," said Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt. "These impressive APR numbers are a testament to the dedication these young men and women have made toward success in the classroom."
Â
Tech made history this year with two athletic programs recognized among the top-10 percent of APR scores that were announced today by the NCAA. Both women's tennis (1000) and women's cross country received a perfect APR score. This achievement marked the seventh-straight year the women's tennis program has earned this recognition.Â
Â
Additional notable APR scores include: Women's Golf (991); Volleyball (990), Lady Raider Basketball (990); Soccer (990); Baseball (988); and Men's Golf (976).
Â
APR data for the 2016-17 report is a four-year rolling score that includes APR data from 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. The 2016-17 single-year data replaces the 2012-13 single-year data for this report.
Â
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
One of the keys to Tech's APR success is the Marsha Sharp Center for Student-Athletes, which boasts a state-of-the-art facility designed to ensure academic achievement for each student-athlete. Responsibility for academic success rests with each Red Raider, and assistance by the Marsha Sharp Center staff – with full support of the Texas Tech coaching staff – helps those student-athletes attain their academic goals.
