Tech set to begin its 12th nationals appearance Friday
STILLWATER, Okla. – Texas Tech Men's Golf will begin its 12th NCAA Championship appearance on Friday afternoon, at Karsten Creek, in Stillwater, Okla.
Tech, the tournament's No. 10 seed out of 30 teams, will tee off at 1:37 p.m. on Friday, paired with No. 11 Clemson and No. 12 Texas. Adam Blomme, coming off a top-10 finish at the Columbus Regional, will lead off, followed by Ivan Ramirez, Sandy Scott, Hurly Long, and Fredrik Nilehn, who could wrap up the single-season scoring average school record this weekend.
The Red Raiders took part in a practice round on Thursday, getting the lay of the land before the tournament begins.
"The message doesn't change. Control the controllables," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "Committing to the shot, staying patient, and being aggressive when necessary. We just need to be us. We've been a good enough team all year, so the approach isn't going to change now."
The championship will feature 72 holes of stroke play to determine the individual champion, with the field getting cut to the top 15 teams after 54 holes. From there, the top eight teams after 72 holes will enter into a match play tournament, seeded by stroke play finish.
Karsten Creek, renowned as one of the top courses in all of collegiate golf, is a 7,460-yard, par-72 track lined with trees, unforgiving rough and extremely fast greens. This is the third time the course has hosted the NCAA Championship (2003, 2011).
"It's all you want in a championship course," Sands said. "It's good, tough, fair and the best teams will advance. This is a special place. I coached a camp for 10 years here, so I've been around the course. I think it fits our guys really well."
Tech's highest finish at the NCAA Championship is a tie for 5th in 2010, where the Red Raiders advanced to the match play portion of the tournament, falling in the quarterfinals.
