Tech In Third Midway Through Round 1 At NCAA Golf
May 25, 2018 | Men's Golf
Ivan Ramirez is tied for the overall lead through 12 holes
STILLWATER, Okla. – Standing next to the 9th green after the final round of the NCAA Columbus Regional, Ivan Ramirez was not happy with how he played all week.
"It's ok. In Stillwater, I'll carry the team on my back," Ramirez told his teammates.
So far, the Texas Tech junior has done exactly that.
Powered by Ramirez's start, 5-under through 12 holes, the Tech men's golf team is alone in third place, and Ramirez is tied for first individually at the NCAA Championship, in Stillwater, Okla.
After a three-and-a-half hour weather delay postponed the tournament's start, the Red Raiders didn't get to the first tee until 5:07 p.m. It was perfect timing.
Ramirez started the onslaught by chipping in from the rough for eagle on No. 1. Hurly Long followed 15 minutes later by landing his second shot within five feet, and rolling the eagle putt home. Suddenly, Tech was -4 on the day, and in third place. That's exactly where they would finish the day, too.
Usually at Karsten Creek, low rounds are hard to come by. However, a lack of wind, and rain-softened greens left the track susceptible to lower scores, and Tech took advantage. The Red Raiders carded 12 birdies and two eagles through 10-13 holes.
"We did a lot of things right today," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "The conditions were about as good as we could have hoped for, from a scoring standpoint, by the time we got there and we took advantage. Ivan was obviously incredible today, but what was almost just as important was how the rest of the guys battled to stay around even par. We have a long way to go--72 holes is the finish line--but we got off to a nice start."
After his eagle on No. 1, Ramirez birdied No. 5. His lone blemish came as a bogey on No. 7, but he immediately erased that with a birdie on No. 8. He went on to birdie Nos. 10 and 12 as well.
Joining Ramirez in the red is Hurly Long, at -1. He paired his eagle on No. 1 with a birdie on No. 4 to offset a pair of bogeys. He's tied for 24th, individually.
After starting 3-over in his first six holes, Adam Blomme rebounded nicely with three-straight birdies on 8-10, finishing his day at +1, through 13 holes.
Sandy Scott joins Blomme at +1 through 11, and freshman Kyle Hogan, subbed in before the round for injured Big 12 Player of the Year Fredrik Nilehn, is hanging tough at +2, through 10.
The first round will continue tomorrow at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start. After finishing the first round, Tech is slated to tee off for round two at 9:17 a.m., playing the back nine once again by starting on No. 10.
