July 30, 2018 | Track and Field
The junior jumper earned First-Team All-America in both the long jump and triple jump in the 2018 outdoor season.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior Odaine Lewis is set to represent his home nation of Jamaica in the triple jump at the Central American and Caribbean Games on Aug. 2, in Colombia.
Â
Lewis, who in his first season as a Red Raider won a Big 12 title and racked up a combined 14 points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, relishes every chance he gets to compete for Jamaica.
Â
"It is always an honor being given the opportunity to represent my country," Lewis said. "I'm grateful for this opportunity and excited to go out there and finish off an amazing season."
Â
Lewis's breakout season began with the spring outdoor campaign. The junior won the long jump in four of his six regular season meets, while also finishing runner-up in the triple jump two out of the three times he competed in it. Lewis, who ranked second in the Big 12 in the long jump behind fellow Red Raider Charles Brown, went on to beat his teammate for the conference title with a leap of 8.07mw/26'-5.75". He placed second in the triple jump with a 16.55m/53'-1.75".
Â
Lewis' performances in the long jump and triple jump at the NCAA West Preliminary qualified him to jump in both events at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. He went on to score 14 combined points – eight in the triple jump and six in the long jump – which made him the third-highest point scorer at the meet. He was a First-Team All-American in both events. Tech finished tied for fifth with 33 points thanks to his contributions.
Â
"Him going out and getting to represent his country, his school and himself at a major championship is always a highlight of any kind of season," said Associate Head Coach James Thomas. "I think he's in position now, with his body rested after a long and hard college season, to go out there and do something special."
Â
Lewis' triple jump is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. central time on Thursday, Aug. 2. The CAC Games are being held at Rafael Cotes Stadium in Barranquilla, Colombia.
