Soccer to Begin Fall with Annual Exhibition at Denver
August 10, 2018 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders will play the Pioneers with just under a week before their 2018 home opener.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech soccer is set to make its annual pilgrimage to Denver for a preseason match with the Pioneers. The Red Raiders will get their first live action against another squad at 7 p.m. central time on Saturday, Aug. 11.
Texas Tech and Denver have only ever played two regular season matches against each other, but head coach Tom Stone and his squad have scrimmaged them prior to the opening of each of the last five seasons. The friendly serves as an opportunity to see a different set of jerseys running around the pitch.
Stone, now entering his 12th season at the helm of Texas Tech Soccer, also sees the trip as a primer for the regular season.
"We've always used Denver as a bit of a measuring stick," said Stone when asked what he is looking for this weekend. "We're going to see the competitive nature of our team, how well we are organized defensively, and how much we're getting out of our young players. It's a complete evaluation."
Denver assistant coach, Kris Peat, was a part of Stone's staff when he coached professionally for the Atlanta Beat of the Women's United Soccer Association. The pair won the inaugural President's Cup with Atlanta in 2001.
The Pioneers are the defending Summit League champions and received a bid to the NCAA Tournament last season. They fell to Colorado in the first round, 2-1.
"[Denver head] Coach [Jeff] Hooker and his staff are the best anywhere, so we know we will face an organized and well-coached team."
A full recap of Tech's exhibition with Denver will be available following the conclusion of the match. For live updates and scores, follow @TexasTechSoccer on Twitter.
