Mentor Initiative Enters Fifth Year for Tech Athletics

J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy will provide leadership development through nine-month program for athletics staff
LUBBOCK, Texas – In addition to supporting more than 400 student-athletes, the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership will once again provide leadership development this academic year to Texas Tech athletics department staff through its mentor initiative.

In this program, various athletics department employees will regularly meet with members of Texas Tech's executive staff to expand their general knowledge of the athletic department, while also learning leadership techniques that will expand their career development.

"I truly believe the combination of building a cohort of young leaders, structured skills training and engagement with our department leadership sets the participants up for continued professional success," said Amy Heard, Senior Associate Athletics Director in charge of the leadership academy. "The benefit to the entire department is continued develop of holistic leaders."

This is the fifth-straight year the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy has held its nine-month mentor initiative. During that time, 53 participants have gone through the program, which features small group meetings, leadership sessions and one-on-one meetings with each mentor.

This year's class consists of Page Carter (business office), Brooklyn Dendle (Director of Golf and Tennis Operations), Tyler Wright (compliance), Colin Becker (compliance), Jesse Funk (academic services), Blake Silverthorn (broadcast services), Abby DeHaas (academic services), Miranda Jensen (sports medicine), Carter Lotz (ticket office), Bridget O'Connell (athletic department planner) and Samantha McInerney (nutrition).

The mentor initiative will close in early May with a celebration lunch for every participant along with Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt and his executive staff at the Texas Tech Club.
