Inaugural Red Raider Night of Giving is a Holiday Success
December 08, 2021 | Student-Athlete Development
LUBBOCK, Texas - The J.T. and Margaret Department of Student-Athlete Development hosted the first inaugural Red Raiders Night of Giving earlier this month at Cardinal's Sport Center. Â
Â
Each of the 35 Texas Tech student-athletes (representing11 sports) were matched with 49 Lubbock ISD elementary students who attended. Provided with a $100 gift card, the Tech student-athletes assisted their young guests with securing items they wished to purchase, as well as calculating costs to ensure their total fell within their designated budget.  After the elementary students checked out with their gifts, dinner was provided for all in attendance.
Â
The event could not have happened without the tremendous generosity of Cardinal's Sport Center, Blue Sky, Texas Tech Athletics, Texas Tech Donors, volunteers, and partners. In the upcoming months another 36 students selected by their district will receive a special shopping experience through a matching donation from Cardinal's Sport Center.
Â
The J.T. and Margaret Department of Student-Athlete Development is in the Marsha Sharp Center for Student-Athletes. The department focuses on providing opportunities for student-athletes to grow into Fearless Champions through community service, leadership development, career development, and personal enhancement. Quotes from the event:
"The kid I was shopping with picked out a pair of shoes that fit him and wouldn't put them back into the box. He had his mom take pictures of him holding and wearing the shoes. I hadn't ever seen someone be that excited for a gift before." -Red Raider Student-Athlete
Â
"My favorite color is purple and all I wanted was a purple coat and that is what I got!" – Lubbock ISD Student
