Texas Tech to face ranked opponents
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Women's Tennis program kicks off the 2019 spring season at the Orlando Invitational at the USTA National Campus this weekend.
The No. 18 Lady Raiders will face athletes from Rice, NC State and No. 16 Kansas in a hidden dual format.
FORMAT OF PLAY
Each team will play three rounds of doubles and three rounds of singles. Each team will play one round of singles and one round of doubles per day. The third set will be played to completion in singles.
SCHEDULE OF PLAY
Friday, Jan. 11 -- 8 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 12 -- 12 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 13 -- 8 a.m.
LADY RAIDERS
Texas Tech returns just three from the 2017-18 team and welcomes seven newcomers, including six freshmen. The Lady Raiders are led by seniors Felicity Maltby and Lana Rush. Maltby received a No. 52 ranking after the fall season.
Maltby and freshman doubles partner Nell Miller received a No. 38 ranking after posting a 3-1 record in the fall.
Senior Francesca Sella, a transfer from San Jose State, went 8-5 in singles play this fall and advanced to the semifinal round of the ITA Texas Regional tournament.
Freshmen duo Olivia Peet and Sydney Jones teamed up in doubles action to post a 7-1 record in their first season with the Lady Raiders. The pair went 4-0 to capture the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational title in the opening weekend of fall play. During the ITA Texas Regionals, the duo advanced to the semifinals as the no. 9 seed.
