Midland native arrives at Texas Tech after combining for 1,653 receiving yards the past two seasons at Nevada
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells added former Freshman All-American wide receiver McLane Mannix to the football program Wednesday as classes began for the spring semester.
Â
Mannix, a native of Midland, Texas, returns to West Texas after two seasons at the University of Nevada where he was arguably one of the top wide receivers in the Mountain West Conference. Mannix will have two seasons of eligibility remaining to go along with a possible redshirt year.
Â
During his two seasons in Reno, Mannix caught 107 passes for 1,653 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns as an inside receiver in the Wolf Pack's spread offense. Over that span, Mannix ranked sixth for receiving yards nationally among wide receivers who were in their first two years of eligibility.
Â
Mannix jumped onto the national scene as only a true freshman in 2017, hauling in 57 passes for 778 yards and six touchdowns en route to earning Freshman All-America honors by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). It marked only the second time a member of the Wolf Pack has garnered the honor in program history.
Â
Mannix ranked among the top freshmen receivers in the country that season, finishing tied for second in receptions, fourth in receiving touchdowns and fifth in receiving yards. He compiled three 100-yard games, including a career-high 150 yards at Colorado State, which ranked as the ninth-highest total in Mountain West single-game history.
Â
As a sophomore, Mannix was once again a frequent target for the Wolf Pack, collecting 50 receptions for 875 yards and seven touchdowns. He was a preseason candidate for the Biletnikoff Award, Paul Hornung Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award and earned All-Mountain West honorable mention accolades following the year.
Â
Mannix enrolled at Nevada out of Midland High School where he recorded 3,492 all-purpose yards and 42 total touchdowns over his prep career. He departed Midland High as the school's single-season receiving leader and as a three-year All-District and All-State selection.
Â
In addition to Mannix, freshmen offensive lineman Trevor Roberson (Wellington, Texas) and freshman tight end Simon Gonzalez (Magnolia, Texas), who both were part of Tech's early signing class, enrolled on campus Wednesday to start the spring semester.
